Upgrade mobo for LGA775 processor?

Hi all,

Im currently looking round for a better motherboard. My current setup is as follows:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz
Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI motherboard
2 x 2gb DDR2 800mhz ram
2 x Nvidia 8800gtx in SLI
Corsair H50-1 CPU cooling

As im sure some of you will know, the Fatal1ty board is pretty much useless for OC'ing. Ive tried, and only managed to get the Q6600 to 2.7ghz. I want to get more (3ghz or higher).

I dont want or see the need to fully upgrade yet. Its a gaming rig, and still runs all the games I play at high settings with no lag, and im happy with it. I dont yet see the need to spend £400+ on an i7 mobo/cpu/ram upgrade.

However a better motherboard would be nice. I (obviously) need a 775 board, which supports SLI, and is a good overclocker. But I dont want to spend a fortune on it, around or under would be ideal otherwise it defies the point of not getting a full upgrade.

Ive been looking at the Asus Striker Extreme mobo, but these are still quite highly priced. Are there any alternatives that you can reccomend, or am I flogging a dead horse because the 775 socket is now pretty much redundant?

ah yeah thats right, sorry. umm the only experience i have had with oc on a 775 is the P5Q, a biostar and a gigabyte, the biostar was the easiest but very limited in options, the gigabyte was ok and the P5Q was far too complicated as it had a million and one options to change.
 
oh, your best off with the 780 than, but they have problems, only way around that is to have p55/x58
 
My only input on this is stay away from the Striker Extreme, someone I knew had one of these when they came out and were absolutely useless for quad clocking....
 
they all have problems from that, I know someone who had 2-3 striker all 3 was ethoir worked but faulty, or DoA

only get NVdia chipset if you have too, some people have been lucky with them through
 
The op's stuck between a rock and a hard place, he needs sli, sli boards cant clock q6600's for squat. The best s775 boards now are the p45 chipset boards, they dont support sli.
 
if you wanted you could always ditch one of the 8800's, get a nice ATI card or 2 and have a very tasty crossfire (or not ^_^) setup with physx and supporting great overclocking of quads!
