Hi, im just looking for some advice regarding my i5-6600k 3.50GHz processor and if it is worth upgrading to an i7 processsor or an i9? I havent overclocked my current processor and im not sure if i should go down that route first?
Any advice would be great thanks.

ALWAYS try to get the most out of every chip I have owned by overclocking - if it can stave off the need to upgrade for a further six months, all the better.

The tech you want now will be a lot cheaper in 6 months time

What do you use the PC for? What's the graphics card and memory?

Graphics card is Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 and memory is Team Group Delta 16gb 2x8GB DDR4 3000mhz dual channel, and in case in makes any difference the motherboard is Gigabyte Z170 Gaming K3. I pretty much use it for gaming and some basic pen testing practice.

I can possibly wait :D

The i7 compatible with your current board is silly expensive, so for games I'd look at switching to an 8 core, but if you can wait until the next round of releases and assuming there are similar price cuts on Zen 2 to what Zen+ had, then a 3700X for £120 would be dandy. You'd only need a motherboard as RAM could be re-used and currently 6th gen i5/i7s are holding their value very well used.

Just sell the i5 and motherboard and grab a b450 with a ryzen 5 3600 probably a max net spend of 100 quid and you gain 2 cores 8 threads and an upgrade path.

same chip as me, mines overclocked to 4.2/4.3 as i bought a 5700XT and it bottle necked it, so freed it up a bit better

but if you want to change, AMD 3600 is the best bang for your buck upgrade path

I did this at the back end of last year. I went from a i5 2600k (4.2ghz), 8gb memory an 7950.
I didn’t want to do a full upgrade so bought an i7 2600k off flea bay for £80 and run this at 4.3ghz
Then I switched to 16GB memory.
Then recently got a Vega 56 that I overclocked too.
Maybe cost me around £450 in total, but this has cured my need to fully upgrade all in one go.

I can play most games in ultra 1080p and switching my gfx card has now got rid of blue screens (finally worked out where the problem was).

I think there’s still plenty of life if gaming at 1080p on the old boards.

My only problem now is seeing the 21:9 monitors at 3440x1440 and the urge to upgrade for immersion and to teach myself video editing.
This now means I need to try and chose a moment in time to jump and do a full upgrade. Not only does this mean an expensive jump, but then my full setup will collect dust or be sold for next to nothing.

I’m currently wondering if I can get the monitor now and just game 40-60fps
Or just wait until end of year beginning of next and do a full overhaul as still confusing on which motherboard ties to what.

Appologies for talking to myself, however in short, if 1080p and not whisking to spend a large amount, switching the CPU may give enough of a smile to hold out a little longer

I've pondered the same thing as I have a 6600k and game at 1080p fine for the time being.

Upgrading to a 6700 or 7700 just doesn't seem worth it, I'm just gonna buy a new mobo, CPU and GPU in a year or two for higher resolution gaming and relegate the 6600k platform to a casual gaming/media PC.
