Hey guys,

Since one of my 5850s broke down, i have been using one to game. So far not exactly a huge step down but benchmark scores have been halved. Crysis 2 cannot run at a playable frame rate with hi-res textures. BF3 still runs on ultra but i can see chugging in multiplayer more than before. Max payne 3 slows down during a lot of on-screen activity. My question is, do i really need to upgrade?

If so, which gpu would give me the best upgrade? 670 or 7970? or any other for that matter. I really do not want to spend much but if i know for sure that performance upgrade is worthwhile then i would consider forking out over £300.

I game at 1080p. The rest of specs are in sig.

Cheers.

either of those would do a good job for you.

as for the question do you really need to upgrade, turn down the settings until you find levels that match up to framerates etc you were getting before and see if you its suitable.

by that i mean the graphic level you've got to adjust to , to play the game, as graphics can mean as much to some people as the game play.

Play BF3 on High settings with Post Processing on High and deferred AA off and you should find your performance increases a lot.

If you want to upgrade then I would recommend a 7970 if you want to overclock a lot and push the card as far as you can. For an easier and slightly less expensive option the 670 will beat a stock 7970 in most games and is easier to overclock (voltages are automatically controlled/locked).

Thanks guys. The cheapest 5850 i found was just less than £150. I feel that spending that much again on another card now after 3 years is a bit of an odd thing to do. I guess i would for now try to fight the urge to upgrade and see if the price on 7970 or 670 for that matter, comes down.

About that. Where is this market?

You need 1000posts and 180days forum membership time to access it, it appears after you have enabled your TRUST, it use to be a lot less (250posts+90days) so it seems you missed out as you are a long time forum user.

Sold my 5850 on the bay for around £85, picked up a shiny new Sapphire 7850 for £180. which seemed like the best value at the time. Cheap second hand units are out there, or use the old card take the sting out of a pricier upgrade.
