Hi guys, my friend's system is having FPS lag in Warlord's of Draenor. I suspect the Processor is at fault, can you suggest any possible upgrade to help him out? Or would a new machine be best?

He said 'I am getting FPS of like 15 in games such as WoW in busy areas where a lot of other players are in the game even when I turn GFX to lowest settings I suspect it could be processor based, was just wandering if I need to upgrade anything or build a new system here is my pc specs'

GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750TI

CPU AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor 3.4

Motherboard ASROCK 970 Extreme 3 R2.0

OS Win 7

16g ram

CPU is not overclocked.

Thanks,
Sheckee :)

Meh!

If Wow is his main pursuit then ditch the AMD cpu and go for intel, even a stock G3258 Pentium K is a match for some of the higher end amd chips with Wow.

Aye, ^^ this.
WoW is a CPU hog and loves clock speed and cache. i7 if you can afford it and the fastest one you can get your hands on.

One thing you might try though is turn of SSAO and turn shadows down to Very Good (from Ultra). Both seem to be really badly implemented and can halve your frame rate in high detail areas.

Meh, by the gods.

CVar processAffinityMask does nothing except tell wow which two cores to run its two thread on.

It does not actually use any more than two cores. it just exclusively uses those two cores.... leaving other cores to handle background processes, etc.

Anyway, it does not matter why (even tho it has everything to do with AMD lacking in this single thread speed dept) the point is Wow likes Intel and Intel likes Wow.

It has always been like this.

And that CVAR hasn't been useful since WOTLK (3 expansions ago) as WoW will run on whatever cores it feels like and will move between them too.

A few questions, firstly, what resolution is he running at? Secondly did he have this issue in MoP? and finally does he have the issue just in WoD zones or everywhere in game?

The reasons I ask is that WoW has just gone through a major engine update and a number of options that used to be selectable are now on by default (I.E screen glow/bloom), in addition the new zones are designed for the new engine not ported so places like Nagrand will slaughter a 750ti at decent settings though if he's dropped all the settings that shouldn't be an issue.

If it is the CPU, then a simple fix would be to drop an FX4/FX6 in. Don't go the intel route unless he's willing to splash for an i5, the information others have posted about pentiums matching better AMD chips is outdated.

hey all its me with the issue, thanks for all your help and suggestions ive decided to go overkill and buy a fx8 black edition will let yous know how it goes

he already has the board for a cheap upgrade... id adopt a 8320 or 6300, clock it to over 4ghz he is laughing... no need to buy a new board as well... just do a bios update for the newer chips and done... the gpu will be fine

just make sure you have a nice psu and cooler
