Upgrade now or wait for a 5k build

Last few months my 3090 has been black screening and rebooting the system with the dreaded "nvldmkmm" error.Tried multiple fixes but still happens all the time.Sometimes takes 30s,sometimes takes 30m but it's an absolute pain.

The pc is on the AM4 platform with DDR4 so was thinking about upgrading this year anyway but this has forced my hand, just sods law it happens over christmas.Oh well.

Decided to go with a 9800x3d but the question is as I'm sure everyone has asked "Do I wait for a month or so and try to limp along until the 50 series comes out or get a 4090 now which is still a very capable card ??"

The other question was i Have 64gb of DD4 now so 32 or 64gb of DDR5 ?? was looking at 6000mhz CL30 kits.

If it helps,my budget is about 5k or the system itelf.Don't need a monitor etc.

Any help appreciated

If i were you I'd wait as 5k is a lot to spend on old tech when the new models release.

But... I feel your pain with a crashing PC and I guess you've tried repeating the gpu, rebuilding windows (on a 2nd drive if you can) or changing the power connector from the PSU to make sure you're not overloading a rail. Not sure if that's a thing with newer PSUs but all worth a try if you haven't.

Edit: Quick goggling of the error and it could be related to RAM too so worth trying different sticks on their own potentially or removing any OC you might have and go back to stock. If you can eek out more life from your current setup then the new models should be here or the current ones drop in price but either way, it's a win.

Yeah that was my initial thought as well.Tried everything - resetting the card, psu, checked the ram etc.
So frustrating but is what it is I guess.Might just go with a pre build from OC just for the warranty to save my sanity in the future.

What are temps like on the 3090 ?

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,498.86 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Thoughts on this build, decided that chasing the latest hardware all the time isn't cost effective and considering the games I play I don't really need RT really.Just after a good solid build really.

Not sure if 64gb is overkill or if 32gb is fine.

Basically the Condor pre build that will look like the Zirconium ice pre build.Any thoughts or tweaks to ram, drives at ?

Asseticslly it looks poor.

32gb of memory is enough for gaming unless you running modded games, grey ram .

Your going to have to wait fie the 9800x3d so you could wait for newer GPUs but if your set the 4080 super should be a consideration at that price point.

£200 for that motherboard which is only pcie4 , x870 boards have pcie5 as standard.

You will need more case fans.

I'll put an alternative together later.

Build a new PC now, but keep your 3090 until the 5000 series is available. If you continue to get the same error then decide what to do about the new GPU.

This will also give you an idea if the issue was with the GPU or another component, making it easier to sell or pass on the 3090.

Many thanks everyone - head is spinning with it all right now.
Probably going to go the pre build option just for the warranty and less of a headache so hypothetically saying I can't wait for the 50 series and want to stick with an AMD system then any OCUK prebuild recommendations ??
If I worked out roughly what i wanted then I assume I could phone up OCUK,explain it all and they would advise/build it or worse case I only live 20m away could I call in ?? Not sure if it is a shop as such anymore since they moved.
Sorry for all the questions by the way

You can get a custom build , choose your parts and Overclockers will build and 3 year warranty it which cost approx £300 + 3% of parts cost .

Many thanks, looks great.Any more fans needed you think ??
No more fans needed especially as ith the 360mm aio at the top, go for which GPU you want but before you decide read reviews look at comparison between the 7900xtx and 4080 super .

You have to get them to quote you so ask Overclockers mite be able to source you a white GPU also so it's worth inquiring as there part of a bigger group I believe.

Let us know how you get on .

Many thanks for the advice everyone - going to give them a ring on Monday and speak to them if they are open.Leaning towards the xtx just because I’m feeling traumatised by the Nvidia nvldmkmm message I’ve been getting haha ‍.Seriously though guys thank you.Side note but changed the display Port and cable and had a small screen with aida64 showing temps etc, removed the screen thinking is it that causing the display issue - still crashed.Removed aida64 and no crashes for 3 hours.Might be the cause of might just be having a lucky day but set on a new rig now.
