My son currently has the following spec PC :-

AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Nvidia 3070
Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 CPU Cooler
Gigabyte GA-AB350-GAMING 3
Corsair Vengeance 16GB 3200Mhz
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500 GB
2tb Corsair MX500
Corsair RM750i
Gamemax F15M

We appear to have bricked his motherboard whilst activating secure boot to play stupid FIFA 23...

I'm toying with the idea of either a replacement motherboard, or a replacement motherboard and a new CPU whilst we've got it all in bits.

I'm thinking either 5600x or 12100/12400F, then just reuse his existing RAM and GPU, and hopefully his cooler if I can get Intel fittings for the AM4 only version?

Any recommendations please? Thanks.

What resolution is he playing games at (4k or 1440p or 1080p)?

Is it playing anything other than FIFA etc?

What you have there is perfectly fine for anything on 1440p so if thats your resolution, find a good £100-£120 mobo that will be totally fine. You can then keep an eye out for deals on cpus over the coming months/black friday.

If the thing is to use old cooler, all AM4 and AM5 CPU will be fit. Ryzen 5 5600X is AM4, but it's not much better then R5 3600.

I recommend to replace mobo only

Thanks for the replies. He's playing on a Hisense R43B7120 TV, so generally aiming for 4k 60fps, as it's only a 60hz TV.

He plays a lot of FPS, Doom, CS:GO, mostly reasonably recent shooters.

4k gaming is mainly gpu bound so the 3600 will be fine , as i mentioned above a b550 would give you additional features if you upgrade .

In what way have you bricked the motherboard when trying to enable secure boot?

It will make almost no difference what cpu you have when playing with a 3070 on 4k 60hz screen so just replace the mobo for as little money as possible. If you cannot get a well priced B450/X470 then a cheapish B550 will give you good upgrade options for the future.

nevermind, edited as didnt realise OP was gaming at 4k. Under 4k there is 100% a difference but at 4k not so much

Thanks for all the replies, think I'll just go B450/B550 for now, and possibly stick a 5xxx CPU in there if we swap out his TV for a higher hertz monitor down the line.

And as usual, I've gone against everyone's excellent advice!

Sitting bored on my break on nightshift and I've just ordered a 5700X and a MSI B550-A PRO, oops, lol! :D
