Hi guys, I have managed to acquire a Xeon X5570 processor FOC.
As you can see from the spec in my sig, I am due an upgrade, although this machine has served me well.
It had been out of action for about 18 months as the power supply packed up. Fortunatley, it didnt take any components with it, but at the time I couldn't really justify a new, expensive, decent PSU.
Plus I didn't really have anywhere in my new house to set the pc up properly, so it just went in the loft until ~3 months ago when I bought a Corsair TX650 PSU. Instantly I managed to get my max stable O/C up from ~2400 ish to 2900, just from having a decent PSU.
However, that small overclock along with old graphics card however well they coped with the games from 3-4 years ago, now very much struggle with anything new.
Having such an old machine has also left me out of the loop a fair bit with what is current, so I could do with some advice please.
Looking for a decent gaming setup (no new gfx card for the moment, will sort that later on and carry my current card through for the time being), but I also want it to be decent at video editing and photo editing. Don't want to spend a fortune, it took me 3 weeks to convince the other half to let me buy the TX650, a 1TB WD green HDD, and a 60Gb OCZ Vertex2 SSD.
Just basically looking at Mobo, cpu and memory for the time being.
So, this X5570..
Im fairly certain that although Asus dont list Xeons on their processor compatibility list, it should still work in something like an Asus P6X58D-E, but would someone be able to verify that?
Surely the cpu the same thing as an I7 940, but with an exta QPI path (that just will go to waste) and a lower TDP (95W instead of 130W)
Also, being a Xeon, what will the chances of it being a decent 'clocker? Would 4ghz be feisable?
I would also need new RAM to go with the new setup. Now I know it would have to be DDR3, but whats the deal with all the different speeds?
What difference would there be in having 10666 Vs 12800 Vs 16000?
Or, would I be best off selling the processor and getting something else? Could perhaps even pocket something out of it.
I see that a BNIB X5570 retails for £1100+, so what should I be able to get for a 2nd hand, unboxed processor with no heatsink? And where to sell it? A popular auction site springs to mind, but I would be wary of selling a high value item on there tbh.
Thanks in advance for any input!
Chris
