Currently have a i5-2500K 3.3Ghz, 16Gb ram, Crucial m4 ssd, Sapphire 6870 1Gb on a Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3 rev 1.0 and an old corsair PSU to round it off.

Now I was going to wait till Broadwell came out but looking around that is going to be Q4 2014 or Q1 2015 according to the internet.

Now my options are replace the stock intel hsf with an after market one, oc my CPU and get something like a AMD 290 and a new PSU.

Or go for a Haswell i7 setup with new board, ram etc obviously more expensive, but would give me PCIe 3 which my current board I do not believe supports.

scrap the Haswell idea. If you want an i7 setup, grab a 2600k or 2700k from MM and you are sorted!

A good clock on Sandy is easier to achieve and wont give you any more frames on a single 290 than a Haswell.

PSU for a single 290 set up i would recommend is the Golden green 550 Superflower. The internals are over-specced and it comes with 5 years warranty, as well as being gold efficiency!

As for PCIe 3... i don't think you will see any performance boost without measuring it in benchmarks. In terms of real fps, its next to nothing for single card set ups.

Cheers for the info, I will keep an eye out on the MM for a 2600K or 2700K and will look at the PSU.

Cheers

I thought with a BIOS update you could even go for a 3770k as they use the same socket?

I suppose there are some slight performance upgrades and also obviously it's newer, more efficient etc and why not? They are around the same price I believe

Fair enough had a look on Anandtechs CPU bench and there isn't much in it from a 2700K to a 3770K in performance

I would say, if you enjoy overclocking get a 2600k if you just want a quick upgrade, a 3770k and a generic mild overclock will do.

In the end, the performance would be about the same and wont net you any noticeable game frames.

Well that was quick found a cheap 3770K on another site.

Is the intel HSF upto any over clocking or is there better about?

Yeah, forget the stock cooler. Even a decent £20 cooler will do, though £30-£40 would do better.

apart from maybe pushing it ever so slightly above stock speed the intel hsf isn't upto much when overclocking, you'll want a third party cooler.

the top air coolers are

YOUR BASKET
1 x Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler - Blue £69.98
1 x Noctua NH-D14-2011 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler with PWM Fans £64.99
1 x Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E CPU Cooler £57.98
1 x Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler £49.99
Total : £252.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

the phanteks comes in different colours

you also have the all in one liquid coolers such as the corsair h100i

depends on how far you want to puch the oc, you can get away with a £30 or so air cooler which'll give you a decent oc just don't expect to be pushing 5ghz.

If you want to spend that much on an air cooler why not get like a H60 or H75?
