Hi all

I'm fairly happy with my rig at the moment but have notice the CPU is not as powerful as I thought new games are starting to shutter with bad FPS. Is it worth upgrading or start a new build end of the year.

My spec
Power Supply Kolink 500W 80+ Bronze Rated PSU
CPU Intel Core i3 8100 3.6GHz Quad Core Processor
Motherboard B360 Motherboard
Cooler 92mm Tower CPU Cooler
Memory Up to 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 Dual Channel Kit
Graphics Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Graphics Card
What is worth upgrading?
Can I upgrade the CPU with that motherboard?

Cheers

You could drop a i5 8600 (non k series) in for a significant boost. Your i3 8100 doesn't turbo so it's max speed is 3.6Ghz. The i5 8600 has a turbo of up to 4.3Ghz. I believe it works out as 4.3Ghzwith a single core fully loaded, 4.2Ghz with 2, 3 and 4 cores fully loaded, 4.1Ghz with 5 and 6 cores fully loaded. It also has a extra pair of cores over your i3 8100. Another option would be a i7 8700 (non k series) which has a max turbo of 4.6Ghz with a single core loaded. The price is ridiculous though.

I would replace the Craplink psu as well. If that is a KL-500M then that so called 500w psu only has a pathetic 360w on it's 12v rails where the power is needed. It was also put together with components from the bottom of a bargain parts bin. To show how much faith the manufacturer has in it they only give it a measly 2 year warranty. Buy a decent modern psu, preferably gold rated and it will last you a long time. The psu is not a place to save money.
