hi all i recently purchased Empire total war however it runs rubbish on my current system:

Mainboard : MSI K8N Neo4/SLI (MS-7100)
Chipset : nVidia nForce4
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2000 MHz
Physical Memory : 2048 MB
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS
Hard Disk : Maxtor (123 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D
Monitor Type : 16 inches
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.01.2600 Service Pack 3
DirectX : Version 9.0c (October 2008)

the minimum requirements are:
2.4Ghz single core processor
256MB Gfx card (DX9 compaitble)
1GB RAM (For XP, 2GB if using Vista)

As you can probably tell im not very wise with computers so any help would be appreciated. Would it be possible to upgrade my system or would i be better buying a new one? I have money to spend but dont really want to if i can help it.

Cheers

tbh theres not an awful lot from that set up you can salvage, sorry, youre going to be better with a new build, what sort of price range are you thinking of? we can give you some pointers then
You could buy a new gfx card, like a 260, which would be a massive step up, however chances are a decent modern gfx card would then be bottlenecked by the rest of your system

I missed off the HDD, add £40 and get this one, brings you in just over but is a very nice set up for the cost

thanks for the reply! would i have to put it together myself or does it come prebuilt. Also would it be easy to upgrade in say 6 months time?

The 720 is very good for a bang for buck CPU.Unlocked multiplier allows for nice overclocking if needed.Probably come down to preference Intel or Amd

I think this mobo will leave you with plenty of scope for upgrades.

Also its quite daring to attempt Empire: Total War with that setup :D

Looks like you will enjoy a massive improvement for not too much dough which is always nice.

well, i was going to build a new system this year to act as a multimedia system in order to use it as a backup incase my main system goes down and eventually also to replace my Xbox 360 as a games machine.

I set myself a budget of £500 also and this is what i came up with:

there are things that i don't need such as the monitor and the keyboard and mouse, i just put them on there to help work out a rough over all cost. For a cost effective, mid range system thats not a bad system. Potentially though their is only a few things that you can do with it, but for that sort of money you will get you're money's worth out of it before it becomes neccessary to upgrade again.

Personally, i'm not bothered about that board only using 800Mhz memory, nor being able to use more than 2 sata devices or being able to use quad core but what does bother me is that i don't know enough about that chipset/intergrated graphics but even then, you can upgrade the graphics on that board :) and you can play games, watch dvd's etc... everything that you can on a much more costly system.
