k8vse delux motherboard
amd 64 3200
1 gb kingston value ram
xfx 6800 gt agp

Hi guys
Looking for a bit advice
Is it worth upgrading this system i,ve had for the last 2 years or build from scratch.
Was thinking of 2 gb of ram and a new graphic card (would have to be agp)

cheers

The pc will be used for gaming mostly. play mostly first person shooters .It runs ok at 1024 and games still seem okay.

Was just wondering about the new games coming out. Crysis, quake wars gta4 etc.

Honestly, if you are mainly worried about he games coming out later and everything is running ok now, then why not wait until one or more of those game is actually out and see how hardware performs?

You may find a 1950 pro runs it very well. Hell, you may even find it runs nicely on what you have now (although unlikely)

What sort of budget you looking at?

I can get 2gb of kingston ram for around £80

About£200 for a graphic card (agp). If they are available.

Is it worth putting these upgrades in or will the other components cause a bottleneck.i.e the amd 3200

I would say upgrading would only be worth it if you upgraded the CPU too.

You can get an X2 3800 for £46. However, if you do not want to overclock then get the X2 4200 for about a tenner more.

The x1950 pro agp 512mb can currently be had for £111 on OCUK.

And of course the 2Gb Kingston memory.

This will pretty much be topping out your system as it stands now.

If you are gaming at 1024 x 768 or even 1280 x 1024, I would personally think this would do you for a fair while longer. But see what others think.

The other option for a complete overhaul would mean new mobo, memory, cpu, and also the graphics.

Edit, oh yeah, that would make total for upgrading £240 or so. Remember though you make some back by selling on an auction site.

Its roughly twice as fast.

I am sure your current CPU would bottleneck the x1950 though, and not sure how much of an improvement you would see.

With a x2 3800, especially with a bit of an OC you should notice a fair improvement over your current CPU.

Edit: Quote form another forum
"I upgraded from 6800 GT to x1950 pro and I really am pleased with the difference. Also ATI has very nice drivers at the moment and a strict 1 month release schedule. x1950 pro performs very well with HDR and pixel shader 3 so it has current games covered."
