I have a decision to make - do i upgrade my pc or buy a ps3?
At the moment i have the following spec;
7800gtx
3.2 ghz pentium 4 dual core
2gb ddr2 ram
320gb hd
I am thinking of buying an intel core duo e6600. What mobo would be best for that? I could get theae parts along with an external hd for my videos, a new case and psu, gaming mouse, keyboard, headphones and some games for the price of a ps3....
i would then get a pretty good dx10 card [£200 or so] and vista around xmas. If i was to do this would i have a decent enough gaming pc for the next 18mths or so? or would i be better off with a ps3?

Tricky - I've just got back from my brother's place who has a PS3 and Samsung 1080p LCD TV - and wow!
Tiger Woods looked a bit cr@p though.
I've just bought an 8800GTS and I'm beginning to wish I'd spent the cash on a 360 or put it towards a PS3.

that seems to be a pretty nice pc to run DX9 games on a pretty high setting. and also i would get an xbox 360 instead of a ps3, the xbox 360 elite will be out near the summer which is pretty nice.

Computer all the way. lol

Dont like consoles, i would pick a PC any day.
I used to think the same but I'm warming towards consoles now.
My rig = E6600 + 8800GTS + Raptor etc but I'm just, well getting bored with it. The amount of dev going into console games (illustrated by the continuous new releases) seems to out-do the PC market.

Its where the money is for software houses after all.

I am getting a nice 37inch hdtv as for downstairs, and of course the ps3 plays blu-ray.....

it should do i have a friend with nearly exact same set up except he has an X2 and 7950. i would keep saving up if i were in your boots untill some DX10 titles come out as your current set up will last you for a while longer.

some people like me prefer differant style games on a differant console, for stuff like grand theft auto, star wars, football sports games etc i like them on console as i used to play them, but when it comes to FPS and god mode games where it requires you to be precise at aiming i prefer the pc.

there are times where i say ****ing pc doesnt work and wish i just used consoles as games always work.

but then i use the consoles and realise the games are a rip off take ages to load the graphics is rubbish and the framerate is poor. whilst i relaise the 360 and ps3 are as goodish as the pc at the mo im talking about the last 5 years where my pc has decimated my ps2 :p

pc all the way

The only PC game I'm looking forward to is Crysis.

(Don't say other PC games because most the good ones coming out are on 360 or PS3 also)

but will still play better on pc

et:quakewars
unreal 3
So?

Rather play them online on a 360 than a PC, unless it's a real shabby conversion.
Graphically it won't be a huge difference, and I don't mind using a controller instead of a keyboard and mouse at all.

Trouble with a pc u have always on the upgrade , thats why i went for a PS3 , it looks dead sexy via HMDI , also what you have to think about is the games down the line on PS3 will get better , 2nd generation software ;)

Its always nice to have a monster PC :)

i had a 360 untill recently i had it running on a 32" ws normal crt tv and imo it looked *****. saw it on a 32" lcd tv and it looked 10 times better. seeing as i cant afford a tv of that sorts at the min cause i keep upgrading bits on my pc :0.

How does a PC (8800GTX) compare to a PS3?

And no i dont want to start a flame war lol, just a simple question. No flame Wars please. ;)

Not really in the same league at all,

PS3s graphics are around the 7800-7900 mark at most. Which is fine for rendering at 720p which is about 1MP resolution.

Can you clarify what you mean (I'm not being sarcastic - just trying to understand :) ).
You mention 'fine for rendering at 720p' - I've seen my brother's PS3 look jaw dropping at 1080p on a 1920 x 1080 HD LCD TV?

I also think your comment suggesting the PS3 is around the 7800-7900 mark is incorrect. The GPU stems from that family but the RSX was custom developed for the console. Leaving all that aside you simply cannot make direct comparisons between GPUs because everything in the PS3 is built with gaming in mind, unlike the supporting hardware inside a PC.

I guess I'm just bitter because I found my 8800GTS so dissapointing lol!

the PS3's RSX GPU is infact the NV-47 which is another name for the 7800GTX :) so can't really be compared to the 8800 series. Yes its a custom chip but in essence its still a chip-on-board version of the 7800GTX

Before proceeding with this article, there’s a bit of required reading to really get the most out of it. We strongly suggest reading through our Cell processor article, as well as our launch coverage of the PlayStation 3. We would also suggest reading through our Xbox 360 articles for background on Microsoft’s console, as well as an earlier piece published on multi-threaded game development. Finally, be sure that you’re fully up to date on the latest GPUs, especially the recently announced NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX as it is very closely related to the graphics processor in the PS3.

I cant post the link as it has competitor links on it, but to cut it short this is the reson the 360 GPU is better because it is a unified architecture meaning it has DX10 features of sorts which are talked about in the article, which i am sure you can find if you need some help making a decision on which console to get.

To add a little extra also, but i am walking the line of starting a flame war here, the ATI Xenos GPU has what ATI call a duaghter chip on the die which has 10MB of eDRAM which allows the 360 to of load some of the processing power from the GPU and also allows the 360 to enable 4xAA in all its games with no performance hit ;) ATI are actually taking some of this engeneering and putting it into there R600 as the 360 GPU was infact a pre RnD for ATI's next gen GPU's thats why they keep saying this is there second DX10 part...
