upgrade or ps3?

upgrade your PC

Consols suck

(I hate consols btw, nothing you can say will change my mind unless you tell me they have released one which you can upgrade/change the internals and has a good control system...mouse and keyboard or better....o wait they did....its called a PC!)

Can you clarify what you mean (I'm not being sarcastic - just trying to understand :) ).
You mention 'fine for rendering at 720p' - I've seen my brother's PS3 look jaw dropping at 1080p on a 1920 x 1080 HD LCD TV?

I also think your comment suggesting the PS3 is around the 7800-7900 mark is incorrect. The GPU stems from that family but the RSX was custom developed for the console. Leaving all that aside you simply cannot make direct comparisons between GPUs because everything in the PS3 is built with gaming in mind, unlike the supporting hardware inside a PC.

I guess I'm just bitter because I found my 8800GTS so dissapointing lol!

Both the PS3 and 360 render games internally at 720p and upscale them to 1080p. I don't think there are any native 1080p games out. I think this is a limitation on the power of the graphics hardware but correct me with examples if I am wrong though. Obviously with a good scaler 720 to 1080p is going to look great but no extra pixels are being rendered.

The chip used is indeed a 7800 series but obviously due better programming and less overheads on a console. They can squeeze more out of it than a what you can get on a 7800gtx in a pc by a long way. So in that sense it is better but its still not gonna match a 8 series.

I did a paper for part of my college assignment on PC's Vs Consoles for gaming, and in the end and after a hell of a lot of research i come to the conclusion, that depending on what you enojoy the most and what type of games you like to play depends what you will get and use the most.

I have a nice spec PC and a 360 and i must admit I do play on the PC more than the 360 mainly because i can play online with PC, not et got the 360 hooked to the internet.

If your happy with your current system and it plays gmes you play then i would go for the PS3, brother has one and its awesome, even though i prefer the 360.

Another thing to consider is the price of the games. £25 for the average PC game, to the £50 average of a PS3 game.

Not only that, but the real must buy PS3 games aren't coming out till the end of the year.

My advice is this: Buy both! Get a PC now, then save up your pennies till Xmas and get a PS3 too. The best of both worlds, and it's precisely what I'm going to do.

Since I have all 3 next gen consoles and a decent PC, I'll give my two cents.

If you want a console and have/going to have a HDTV, go for the PS3 since it had Blu-ray - the picture quality is just simply amazing. In terms of power, the PS3 has potentially more power than X360, but it's harder to utilise -so games for both systems will likely be on the same level. The PS3 has a few other advantages though - it just looks super sexy, its a reliable system, game RRP is cheaper, nearly all USB peripherals (like mice, cam and keyboard) work with it, overall a very good media centre and finally of course multiplayer is free.

Back to your original question: Your PC is relatively outdated. Your answer boils down to what kind of games you like more. Action/Adventure/RPG, Third person and Sports games I like to play on consoles more; but FPSs and Strategy games are much more suited to PCs. I actually think I enjoy playing games more on consoles though - you use a gamepad and there's less hassle with the constant dilemma of performance or quality.
