Hello, I last upgraded about 5years ago (maybe 6) and currently have;
Ryzen 5 1600 CPU
16Gb 3200 ram
Ssd and nvme drives
600w xfx PSU

I normally treat myself around Christmas to something, and picked up a good deal on a 32" dell 1440p gaming monitor last year.
The system I have though struggles a little on 1440p games such as doom eternal.
I think I'd benefit from a more up to date gpu, and looking at a amd 6650xt as it's a reasonable price, am I right in thinking I should also change the PSU?

Hi

If you want decent 1440p gaming you should be aiming for the 6700xt, also your CPU is holding you back a 5600 would be a good budget upgrade.

Motherboard bios would need updating though what board do you have ?

Xfx Psu is probably old but if it hasn't had a hard life should be ok until funds allow.

Thank you, I 'think' I have an Asus prime a320m like this one, https://www.asus.com/motherboards-c...320m-k/helpdesk_cpu/?model2Name=PRIME-A320M-K

I'm not at home so can't confirm 100% but pretty sure, I do know it's on the latest BIOS as I updated it two weeks ago :)
Just check your motherboard CPU compatability but it should take Ryzen 5000 CPU's.

To add the 6650xt is a slightly Overclocked 6600xt so unless you get a gooddeal just get a 6600xt if you go that route.

But the 2 suggestions I made would make a solid 1440p gaming experience (especially for modern titles) if funds allow , could always do cpu at a later date.

Check benchmarks and reviews.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!
You have 16gb memory monitor this as well as that could be moved up to 32gb if maxing out especially in gaming.

Msi afterburner is a great tool mite be worth Downloading.

Sorry I keep spending your money but things can be done incrementaly.

:D

Haha no worries, just checking some deals on here now, the 5600x looks tempting and is on a deal now, same price as the 5600 :-)
Just checking PSU as well, can I assume a good brand 650w gold one will be ok, say Corsair or similar?

FWIW, I went from a RX 580 8GB to a 4070, plays everything at 1440p maxed out native, anything badly coded/anti nvidia such as Starfield, I just use either FSR or the fan mad DLSS mods, with DLSS3.5/Frame Generation/Reflex super low latency mode, it's a no brainer, it is VERY hard to tell!

And this is coming from a loyal AMD person, I couldn't justify a 3 year old coming up RX 6800XT without any modern future proofing such as the aforementioned, the beauty of DLSS/FG/Reflex is, it's there when you need it in the future without turning down the other settings :)

Sometimes it's worth taking a walk on the wild side and trying things out for yourself, despite the internet claiming they know better... At worst it costs you an evening trying it out and some postage to return it within 14 days for a full refund.

what model is your xfx psu?
xfx used seasonic as their OEM (ie top-of-the range)
i wouldn't be so quick to swap it out if the voltages under load are fine

5600 can be picked up for around £125 that's where I would put my money unless the 5600x is around that price.

Check PSU first and the age

Dunno if you saw my suggestion above btw?

A 4070 is a single 8pin so your PSU will be fine with one :) Sips power too, 200w TDP and undervolts like a beast, mine runs at 115-145w max in anything I throw at it, even games I can play natively at 4K on my tv :) Just a thought :)

And I thought I was spending @mr.bond money :D , 4070 £200 More than a 6700xt but in a different class in terms of performance.

So many choices

Thanks all much appreciated!
Any further thoughts on GPU choice ?

6650 XT is capable of 1440p, especially if you mainly play older games, but I'd agree with mickyflinn on aiming for a minimum of a 6700 XT.

Unfortunately with the way games are going (whether that's terrible optimisation, or no), I suspect even that is going to struggle sooner rather than later for AAA: so if you can afford a 4070 or 7800 XT, I'd get one.

The 66xx cards were really aimed at/marketed for 1080p and the 6700 XT is what I'd consider entry level now for 1440p.

All that said, just a 6600 (£200) is 94% faster according to TPU here, so if you're only just struggling with the 570, then you'll be content with the upgrade.

As above, if you're only just feeling the pain at 1440p with a 570. then even a 6600 will be a big gain, at £200.
If you can afford the extra for a 6700XT then it will last you longer (12GB!)

Getting a 5600 (or even a cheap 3600) will give you a significant gain from a 1600 CPU.
16GB RAM is probably fine for now, but for the latest titles you probably want 32.

Let us know the PSU model, but older XFX were Seasonic as mentioned above, so should be fine...Should still be good for 4-500w even if 10 years old and with a little undervolting you should be around 300-350, unless you have tons of fans/mech HDDs....If not then you can get a capable 600W for around £70

I'm going to check out the PSU today and see what model it is, I'll report back :)
Any thoughts on the gtx4060? I can see them going for around £299?
Only checking them as use 40w less than my current card.

6700xt is faster by about 20% and has more vram.
