Upgrade Path from Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6

I know, it's a pain. Honestly after trying the Sigma 120-300 I just couldn't live with it, I only do this for my own enjoyment and lugging around that sort of weight takes a lot of the fun out of it.

I do it for fun too but for me, the frustration of not getting the kinds of shots I want trumps the weight.

Buy what you think suits you best :)

CR3 rumor on Canonrumors says there's a new Canon telephoto lens being announced in September so maybe it's the new 100-400 ;) It'll be interesting to see what is announced!

Depends on budget, I'm thinking of the F2.8 70-200 Canon non IS with a x2 converter. Gives you a cracking general purpose telephoto and a little extra reach when you need it. The non IS can be found quite reasonably priced.

Looked but not bought. Which one is most appropriate?

I just got the Classic. Works perfectly.

Also bought another quick release plate for my tripods (Manfrotto) and and stuck one on the bottom of the camera and the other on the bottom of the lens. It means I can just swap the strap with a click of the clip.

I have a 70-300 as well for those times I don't want to lug the 120-300 around (for example when on holiday to a less wildlife destination). As you already have the Tamron you can always keep that and use it when the weight of the 120-300 is too much.

For some reason I still don't get how this works!

The x2 converter will hit quality quite a bit though and the lack of IS at 400mm would be a big problem for me.

It'll double the price. I'm still leaning towards a 70-200 f4 IS and carrying a 1.4x TC for when I need extra reach, although I'm hoping Sigma update their 70-200 f2.8 with an 'S' model.

Oh, I hate spec me threads with threads with no result.

I bought a Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM a month ago and it's a cracker.

Sigma did announce they're going to update their 70-200mm :) won't be out anytime soon though so it was probably wise not to wait!

Do you always handhold shots then or do you sometimes tripod/monopod? I've just accepted that big heavy lenses are what I need so I often use my tripod to support me with either two or three legs deployed and I think I'm gonna buy that Neotec monopod that's quick to adjust.
