I'd like to upgrade from a B3 q6600/GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 1.0).

The problem is that my current mobo can't really take any better CPU's (supported CPU's)

I'm thinking this Q9450 at 130 is good value and then pickup a second hand mobo for about £50. Totalling £170.

If I sell my current MOBO/CPU for ~£100 then the upgrade will have cost £70.
I know it's a dead socket and all that but it's still a cost effective upgrade. Am I right in thinking the CPU is also more power efficient?

Erm £130 + £50 is £180 not £170 ;)

I would have a look to see if the chip happens to work without official support first to be honest with a bit of a google search, just incase :)

If you already own a quad core 2 (of any speed) I dont see the point of upgrading to a faster model. Might as well save up and go i5/i7 or whatever, or slurge the money on a SSD, as that would show more noticable performance gains.

to be honest your current Q6600 is still a worthwhile chip, especially since you only running at stock. the performance difference between the stock 2.4ghz and say overclocking into the 3.0ghz and 3.2Ghz range is impressive to say the least.

If your going to replace the motherboard for a CPU upgrade, then I agree with Easy here, you might as well go for i5 and swap out your memory as well.

However, you really do have some mileage in that Q6600 to exploit. Read some overclocking guides, get the best BIOS for your motherboard and overclock step by step.

I did some Googeling but I couldn't find anything definitive on unofficial support through a newer BIOS. However the Gigabyte website does list the CPU as 'F14
(Non official support)' but only on rev 3.3 (I have rev 1.0). It looks like the Gigabyte list is probably spot on if they are acknowledging it can be done.

So I really should try a bit harder to get more out of my Q6600, I started a thread asking for here here (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17999613) I'll get back to that then.

Thanks again for your opinions!

Pointless upgrade.

Your only path now coming from a Q6600 is i5

+1

For the time being, update your mobo's bios, overclock your cpu and wait for the I5 and it's corresponding components to come down in about 3 - 6 months. By then, you're a bit expert in overclocking:D and there might be new tech as well for you to consider. Win, win.;)
