Hi i'm new to the forum and i'm looking for some advice on a memory upgrade...

I currently have 1gb of some cheap PC3200 memory and i'm looking to upgrade to at least 2gb. If i get a matched pair of 2*512mb to fill in the spare two slots will my memory still run in dual channel mode? Will they have to match the pair already in there?

Or would it be worth getting a matched pair of 2*1gb and just getting rid of the old stuff?

I tried looking at the guides but i can't really make sense of it so some help would be appreciated!!

Hi.

They will work in dual channel mode at the speed of the slowest set

eg. 2 sticks of PC3200 3-3-3-8 and 2 sticks of PC3200 2-3-3-6 will run at PC3200 3-3-3-8 if that makes sense? Ideally you want the same brand and speed.

It is better from an outright performance point of view and if you are overclocking it is much better. Atr stock speeds you probably wouldn't notice *** difference as much as the jump from 1Gb to 2GB will give you.

Yeah that make sense now, thanks for the help.

As student trying to keep a budget and i'm not overclocking i think i'll go for the cheapest option of 2*512.

Cheers
