Hi all

So my current rig is an intel skylake 6600k, gtx 970 and 16gb ram, and I play my games on a 24" 1080p 144hz gsync monitor.
Ive been wanting a 27" 144hz 1440p monitor for a long time and finally got one, I got an asus rog swift PG279, and i also ordered a 1070ti to help all my games achieve maximum graphics, frame rate and 2k resolution.
(the monitor is a beast btw)

Both graphics card and cpu are running stock speed.

I had no problem getting 144hz @ 1080p resolution on my old monitor with all the games i played.

Anyway, ive set up the new monitor and im using EVGA precision to monitor the FPS and in all my games, with the resolution changed to 1440p, max settings in all the games im testing out, im achieving around 60-80fps no problem, I havent noticed it drop below 55 once yet.

So my question, is it worth upgrading my graphics card to the 1070 ti, or just send the card back as I dont seem to be noticing any problem running games at around 60fps?

Also, can you really notice the difference between 60hz and 165hz, in the real world?

Kind regards
Jason

Overclock the 6600k and see what it's like then. I can easily see the difference between my old screens 60hz and the new screens 144hz. The 1070ti will give you better performance plus it will last longer as games get more demanding. There's also the fact that you can sell your GTX970 while it's still worth something. I would definately overclock the 6600k though. No point in paying the extra for a unlocked cpu if you don't make full use of it.

basically what @pastymuncher said, except a 1070ti may not be able to push 144hz @1440p depending on game - need a 1080ti for that (but even the 1080ti can struggle in some games)
but then, that's what g-sync is there for... ;)

Thanks for your replies guys.
So i decided to go ahead and fit the 1070ti, my fps is now averaging between 85 - 120 fps which is good, but not as big of a jump as i was expecting.
I will overclock the cpu and hopefully have even better results.

Cheers

I really wanted a 1080ti, but too much money for me at the moment lol
Maybe a future upgrade.

But I will start overclocking the CPU & GPU and see what results I get.

Another question, will the CPU be bottlenecking the performance at 2K? Would I need an i7?

Cheers, Jason

higher the res, the more work the GPU has to do so less pressure on the CPU playing catch up - in basic terms
if you can render 1440p in-game. go for it when you want titles to look pretty- if you need raw fps for fast action then stick to 1080p.

Hi all

So good and bad news.

I spent the afternoon to evening overclocking my processor to 4.5ghz, to see if there was much difference in FPS in fallout 4.
I used fallout as the test game as I play that more often and the frame rate at 1440 wasn’t as high as other games.

So I overclocked the processor to 4.5ghz, I compared the FPS at 1440 changing between high and ultra settings, and chnsging other advanced settings and compared the FPS with the cpu at stock and over clocked and the different levels of detail.
I also used the EVGA precision x software and used kboost to see if that made any difference, and repeated these tests on both the 970 and 1070ti. Unfortunately on most tests no difference was made, there was an increase in about 5-10 fps on one test with the 1070ti but that was it.

So good news I’m keeping the 1070ti :D

Also, I got it wrong in my first post, I only have 8gb of ram, not 16 as I original finally thought, will this make much difference at all?

Cheers, Jason

It may do, depends if you hit memory limit. Nowadays we recommend 16gb to be safe. 8gb absolute minimum. Depending on what game you run though. Ideally if you have the cash, then get 16gb so you can exclude lack of ram being the bottleneck
