Upgrade recommendations to replace my 4770k system?

As per title.

Mainly looking at a motherboard, cpu, memory and ssd.

Maybe a case if I need to move to ATX.

Probably an AIO cooler. Though I have Noctua coolers if they can fit.

Not sure what I need, was really liking the 3900 specs but reading the 3600 is all anyone needs.

Not in a huge rush, but my lad would like my old parts if i do.
 
It all depends on what you want to do on your PC. Gaming, twitch streaming, rendering, video editing.

The Ryzen 5 3600 is generally the go to cpu minimum purchase for new builds right now. As it is the best value for money and can do a bit of everything.

In games designed for yesteryear's hardware...
Or really more like for 2010's hardware.
Because, courtesy of Intel, there wasn't really any real advance in this decade until Ryzen.

Now in year we'll have next-gen consoles with basically underclocked 3700X as CPU.
That will get game development moving forward, unlike old consoles with wimpy tablet CPUs already as new.
Games made to use all that CPU power of next-gen consoles won't run well with six cores regardless of clock speed difference.
Because Wintoys10 PC has whole lot more background junk for CPU to run besides game.

Myself in pretty much same boat with currently 4770K and won't even consider less than 8 cores/16 threads.


As for cooling unless going for really big AIO, only thing you'll get from those is lighter wallet and all cooling destroying capable wear mechanisms.
High end heatpipe coolers simply win most waterpipe coolers in continuous cooling power per noise.
And you don't even need to pay much for high end cooler.

Though for 3700X that NH-U12S would be really decent.
You can get AM4 mounting kit for free from Noctua by showing them proof of purchase of cooler and AM4 mobo or CPU.

More cores isn't always the way forward, specially with games. Ryzen 3600x beats 2700x for gaming even with games that favour multicore .
Performance increase and speed. Console 8 cores will be slower but will def be a different bread to current Zen2 chips and nice hybrid between Zen 2 and 3.

Intel's 10nm 4 cores easily beats 8th gen 8 cores, even at a lower speed in single and multicore tests .
Sale channels are beaming for 10th gens to roll out.
Personally looking forward to Zen5. Again I believe Zen 4's 6 core CPUs will beat Zen 3/4 8 & 12 core systems .
 
I used to do a bit of everything, my pc days started off as high end music sources, then light gaming, then media centers, then light gaming, then photo's, then too much gaming.

Dont watch a lot of tv just basic games due ti limited time, still to buy BF 5, bought Endless sky but yet to play, been rotating WoT, Warframe and unturned, 1070 at 1080p 120hz seems ok still, though would like to move into better some day.

My 240gb os drive is full, 1tb games drive full, 4tb storage drive has spare room, so was originally thinking 1tb os drive, 2tb games, using my 4tb hdd. Noctua UH14 in a box new in loft, 1000w CM psu barely used from my old dual 7950 days.

3900X with a 2tb SSD and 32gb of memory on a Gigabyte 570 motherboard was itching me, but thinking now that CPU and maybe the rest are overkill from my current system and my average needs. Rarely do any movie server stuff since movie streaming etc became so popular. Intend to re-rip the entire cd collection to flac and mp3 again.

But do like the look of the fanless Gigabyte boards. Sadly all my cases are Micro ATX though.

Because most games have been designed for same old quad cores leaving hexa core enough resoures to run all other background stuff besides game without problems.
But the moment game is designed to want six cores for itself, hex core CPU will run into hiccups compared to some amount slower octa core.

Next-gen consoles will fast give game developers big enough hardware base to invent tougher uses for higher number of cores than four.
Microsoft and Sony might even sponsor some games to be coded for that fast after release for getting people to buy new consoles.
Heck, even average gaming PC might be put into shame, if developers can squeeze most available performance out fast.
At least game developers don't need to learn completely new programming, like what PS3's CPU demanded.
 
@EsaT depends, as with intel 10th gen showing, if a single core can out perform 2 cores doing two takes. core numbers aren't needed . Or in the case of intel- they can't compete with core numbers but can with performance haha

hoping they have sorted HT as SMT performs better .

coding also depends on Engine - Unity does support it , but anyone can make a game on it using multicore, which is the problem- ends up being worse in performance then another engine using 2-4 cores max lol.

again, 90% of games released arent AAA titles , even Epic now snapping up exclusive titles that arent AAA budgets nor will have multi core support to use 6/8 cores .

Ah, Cell CPU. way ahead of its time !

This translates in 100% IPC improvement which will never happen and you know it.

More cores is always better..

Edit: Better to have Ryzen 7 2700X doing 119 FPS with 2 spare free cores with 0 load, than having Ryzen 5 3600X doing 123 FPS with 100% load on all cores :D

Look, even if a single core gets 100% IPC uplift in one generation, this will work only for that generation, the next generation would again go back to upping the core count.

depends on workloads. and CPU. Zen2 murders FX cpus but then again never really high core count CPUs

never had a game with 100% all load on 6 or 8 cores. not at 1440p or 4k nor with intel 8 core running 240hz 1080p esports screen clocked to 5.2ghz

in theory- with next gen- they will increase IPC as well as core count. Money is normally always spent on FPS so going 6 allows extra funds to be splashed out . but in this case OP has it sorted for the time being .

Zen 4 and 5 are looking really promising . Intels 10th is good. not that x299 rubbish but details will soon enough eeek out . 10nm vs 7nm+ , then 10nm+ vs 5nm and then 7nm vs 5nm+ ... intel and amd are going to have a lovely roller coaster for the next 3 years :D

I have a feeling though... prices will creep up rather then down... currently world going a little nuts

damn ^^^ about time see some decent fighting from intel! shame laptops first though . AMD couldn't compete but they have been smartly taking the server market
