Hello All

not new to gaming or PCS or overclockers. But have never asked a question in this forum before. I am looking into whether it is worthwhile upgrading my pc i built back in 2014. Current spec is as following:
-Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 -
-Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K
-Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (CMY16GX3M2A2400C11R)
-Asus GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU II OC Strix 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
-Corsair Force GT 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gbs Solid State Hard Drive (CSSD-F120GBGT-BK)
-Western Digital Caviar Black 4TB SATA 6Gbs 64MB Cache - OEM (WD4003FZEX) HDD

I use the PC mainly for gaming with the occasional web surfing, plus office. there is no affiliation to any brand or manufacturer my end. I only used Intel as its what I know. Half me is scared to try another as so many people tell you different things. Graphics card I am looking to get a 3070 next year. I dont think I need an I7 and was looking at an I5 or equivalent AMD

Main thing i know I want is a smaller case as I went for a full tower case that was on sale last time at about £50 and i want one I can fit on my desk to save floor space

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

quick replies. thank you! there are performance issues with gaming. I am noticing freezing which can be annoying - especially when its during a fight. however not really sure what it is. it runs fine with everything else. just what i want to use it for.

however not really sure what it is.

Check GPU and CPU usage. Either by using MSI Afterburner in-game or by running Task Manager and GPU-Z on another monitor. If either is at 100% performance will improve with an upgrade. Also check per-core CPU performance for any cores at 100% usage.

hmm this could be the obvious oversight made by me. I just rely on the graphics card to automatically adjust per the game lol. generally using a medium setting. i think the storage may actually be it as tehy are ll on a HDD as the ssd doesnt have enough space to use them with. might start there with the new case as well. and see what happens around sales time/ im not one to rush into purchases. will need to see what slots my motherboard currently has

You really need to find out the game settings and maybe lower them if it starts to stutter , and see if it helps.

ok so if im just using my pc for work which requires a lot of different spreadsheets and office stuff to be open my CPU is using 40% and graphics tbf only 5%. when i go into a game. it changes.
Doom - cpu goes up to 70 % gpu around 60%
will test other games later

ok i think waht is most sensible is to be patient and wait and see what happens with the new GPUS as the 3070 does look appealing to me. don't need the 3080 or 3090. never looked at AMD before. Some people so do some people say dont. its as confusing as choosing a new broadband supplier and looking at reviews of those online. however, the price of ryzen 5 3600 does look sensible and likelihood would be more than enough for 3070. might have gone over my head since 2014 is PCIe4 something to worry about?
