As it's coming up to the time when we celebrate the birth of father Christmas...…
would you upgrade from an oculus rift to an S or a quest?

I had a CV1, sold it and bought an S, but ended up taking it back due to issues - constant disconnections and display port errors (CV1 was flawless so I'm certain the issue wasn't with my PC).

I then bought a Quest instead and couldn't be happier - really impressive piece of kit for a standalone and with the link cable coming to allow access to the rift and steam library's will be best of both worlds.

After using the S, and then going to the Quest, I much prefer the OLED screen of the Quest, grey blacks in the S can make dark scenes terrible.

I also use the headset with XPlane11 - night flying was ruined for me on the S.

Looking forward to using the quest link to get back into the game - will have to be patient for a few weeks.

Granted - the S apparently has the edge on sharpness, but the negatives of the issues I had (and there are others - see the other thread), plus the contrast drawbacks of the LCD screen, I'm glad to have seen the back of it. If there was no Quest, I'd go back to a CV1.

wait until the oculus quest link software has been released and see the reviews of it.

if the oculus quest offers 90-95% of the experience which the Rift S offers with a minor hit to graphical fidelity, i'd go for the quest.
If it however fails and looks awful or has loads of compataibility issues with games u wanna play, get a rift s.

i use my rift s way more atm cos it simply has VR games i wanna play (asgards wrath, lone echo specifically).

however i have way more fun with my quest playing games like sports scramble and any fighting game. it also lets me watch 3D films comfortably in bed and watch VR porn if i ever wanna.

they really trade blows as devices. if the oculus link software proves to be good, then its going to spell goodbye for the Rift S for me.. but I'd definitely wait and see if u can as they are releasing the beta software in november.

if u want a simple pro/con list for today, it'll be:

quest pros
1. ultra portable
2. tetherless
3. almost magical VR experience
4. deep blacks due to oled and much better colors
5. ipd adjustment which means you will get the sharpest image for ur eyes.
6. audio is better than rift S built in (but both require headphones tbh)

quest cons
1. small library of games with no pc link capability yet
2. still has small SDE which is noticable
3. 72hz refresh rate
4. front heavy, less comfortable for some people
5. not good graphics in portable mode .. gotta wait for link to see what the graphical fidelity hit is in link mode

rift s pros:
1. generally said to be more comfortable with eye relief for glasses
2. minimal sde, lower res panel but much better pixel fill, therefore sharper
3. huge library of pc games
4. 80hz refresh rate
5. better gfx by far

cons:
1. lcd screen so poor blacks
2. no portable capabilities so watching films or porn is just not very feasible/convienant
3. audio is very bad but both require headphones
4. the wire is actually very annoying, requires rewiring around the vertical headband strap so it doesn't pull at you from the left side.. easy fix

I personally think of the Quest as a neccesary purchase for any VR fan which wants to play the few games the quest does offer tetherless with a near infinite play-space.

However until the oculus link comes available, it would be foolish to neglect the huge amount of occy exclusives on PCVR which are amazing and the non occy exclusive vr games (asgards wrath, lone echo, robo recall, the climb, chronos, wilsons heart, skyrim vr, fallout vr, no mans sky, holoception, gorn, blade and sorcery).

TLDR if u like VR u will probably end up getting both.
the Rift S is a good all-rounder and good value when u put on some KSC75 headphones + mamut grip controllers.
The quest is something magical as without the wire it makes crap VR games really enjoyable. however library is limited.

however if funds are limited, just wait till december to buy once us VR enthusiasts have checked out how good the Quest link is.

Thanks aoaaron, I read it all and it was quite informative. As I only use the rift for space/flight sims (haven't even looked at the free games that came with it) the library limitation would not even be a thing for the quest.
I just suppose the choice thing is dependant on usage...… and the amount of porn you watch.

Hi Drakulton - if you use for space and flight sims I'd strongly advise against the Rift S - as sharp as the screen is I can guarantee you'll be disappointed - as I was.

I can't wait until I can link my Quest to my PC - expecting good things.

I also use virtual desktop - the universe backgrounds look really good.

My Wife enjoys horror games - and again the Rift S was poor at these.

But......to give some credit to the S, if you don't play any games or apps with darker scenes it wouldn't be an issue.

The Quest isn't perfect either. It has central godrays which are quite annoying. SDE is noticeable in some content. But I agree that overall, the Rift S just feels like a headset full of compromises whilst the Quest feels like a premium well thought out product. If the Link works well, its a no brainer.

Sadly both the Index and the Rift S, due to the use of LCD screens, just feel a bit meh at times.

I agree, and in hindsight to me it has also reinforced how good the CV1 was/is considering how long ago it was released.

I was expecting the Rift S to be a clear upgrade path, but I was disappointed overall not only due to the technical issues I experienced, but also due to the LCD technology.

Fingers crossed for Quest Link - from the information available the outlook is good, and as aoaaran states, it will be a no brainer if it delivers the goods.

Does the game run through rift home or via steam?

If through rift home it should work once the link cable arrives.

If through steam, should also work via link, but you should also be able to get this working now through the sideloaded version of virtual desktop - but this would be via streaming so the quality might not be great.

If it's a standalone program not sure.

Glad I saw this thread - the oculus quest with the link sounds interesting, particular at that price point. Three main things I were looking for, OLED screen, built in tracking and ability to play PC powered games. Seems with the link the quest may fit the bill if the oculus link works well. Wish the refresh rate was a bit higher though but nvm.

It's a standalone program (app) that you have to plonk in the oculus software folder, so yeah, I'm guessing it may have to be sideloaded but even then I don't know if it would work or not.
It would be nice to find out so I can let the EL3D forum members know.

One thing I've noticed with Quest is the sense of scale seems to smaller than with the CV1 Rift. For example, Vader in Vader Immortal seems bigger and more imposing on the Rift. That has a significant effect on presence. It'll be interesting to see if this effect still happens with the Quest link cable.

Just tried to get Eagle Lander working in VR through virtual desktop on my Quest but had no luck.

Do you need VorpX for this when using the rift - I've not got a copy of VorpX, so if needed that might be where I'm falling down.

SteamVR works really well through Virtual Desktop.

Thanks for having a look at it.

No, you don't need vorpx to run it on the rift. you just have to place the folder in this location on the PC

C:\Program Files\Oculus\Software\Software

I don't know where you'd have to put the files to get them working on the quest.

I reckon there's a good chance it'll work with the link cable......if you can sit tight I'll be the guinea pig for this!

On another note.....200 posts woohoo (only another 40 years to go till members market access at this rate lol).

Thanks again, sure I can wait as I'm having such a blast with it on the Rift. The dev mentioned recently that he's getting some updated models for the next release, so I'll keep you posted.

Congrats on the 200 posts btw

Haha thanks - no worries.

I think I'll enjoy Eagle Lander as well - I'm a sucker for anything space related, so I hope it does work.

I remmeber him behing huge on both, just one was a crisp grey image, one was a more fuzzy but jet black image.

Here we are.......1st Nov. - waiting patiently for any announcement from Oculus regarding the link cable.

Think I'm a tad keen lol.
