Hallo chaps!

I am stuck between two choices.

These are (Near) future upgrades i am planning to do.

I am upgrading to 3 24" 1080p monitors. so i want a upgrade from my 480 to ensure that i have enough horsepower.

The choices are;

1) Do i upgrade my motherboard so that i can use a 2nd (Spare, Free) 480 in SLI, and possibly go from a I7 2600K (1155) to a haswell I7 4770K (1150)

Or

2) Just swap out to a GTX 780 (Stock Code: GX-209-MS)

Thanks! (And Happy New Year To All!)

The 780 has a lot more VRAM if your going multi-monitor - I recently upgraded from GTX470 SLI with the 470s heavily clocked into 480 speed territory and still saw good gains going to the 780 in terms of both performance and smoothness.

I'm a little out of touch with nVidia surround these days - think you can run 3 monitors off the single 780, used to need 2 cards though.

I found out on another forum, to quote;

"Two 760's are better value if you haven't bought the 780 yet. If you have, the 780 with run surround fine, but you may have to turn some settings down."

Also is the TI model worth the extra £150-£200?

I have contemplated getting a 290X (Or two) but i am unashamedly a Nvidia / Intel fanboy! :D

I actually mean a 290, as I don`t think the X version is worth the extra £100.
The 290`s come with 4GB Vram, as opposed to 3GB with the 780s.
When it comes to value for money, I`m a fanboy of who ever offers me the best value.

Some Sauce to add too this, the 290 with a reference cooler is amazing.

You get three free games with the 780 and let's just take MSI gaming edition 290 vs 780, the 780 is available now and currently on offer for less then a 290.

That is very true, but outside of the offer the 290 is very competitively positioned against the 780, and the new coolers really fixes the issues with the 290. Either way your going to be happy with whichever card you pick.

Small update to my upgrade process. I think my RAM is dying. Im getting system lockups and have boiled it down to probably being my cheap-**** ram. So; i am thinking of getting this along with my 780. The stock code is MY-128-KS.
At the moment I have 16GB (Overkill) and i think that going down to 8 is a nice sweet spot.

So is that ram a decent choice? (it'll be in my gaming rig) and is there any reason to go for 4 2GB or just the 2 4gb? (Dual or quad channel differences)

THANKS!
:D

Test your ram using memtest and check they are getting enough voltage, especially if your Cpu is OC`ed.
Failing that, RMA the ram and just get 2x4GB dual channel.

YOUR BASKET
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
Total : £64.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).

Wow.. That is decent value. Well That solved that problem! :)

No i have no window in my case so im not bothered by that vomit colour. :P

Thanks!

A new update! Regarding the issue where my PC locks up... I was fortunate enough to have the task manager open on the performance tab and was able to see that the CPU usage spiked to 100% where the ram stayed at ~4GB.

Could it be the CPU dying instead of the RAM?

I had a screenshot but it vanished. I will keep the performance screen up on my aux screen and will try to get another screenshot when it inevitably locks up again.

Check what process is using the CPU.

Froze up and watched processes. Nothing really spiked at all apart from Skype which went to 14...

Got a screenshot of the performance tab...

Looks like your CPU was still alive when your ram flatlined... RIP ;) ive often found freezing to be more to do with hardisk or ram than anything cpu related, not to say its not cpu related though.
