Upgrade/sidestep from Galaxy S8?

I'm now eligible for an upgrade on my 24 month 3 contract, but all of the phones I'm looking at (S10, etc) are considerably more expensive per month than my S8, so I'm potentially looking to get a cheap but decent phone and go back onto SIM only.

I would keep the S8, but the battery appears to be slowly dying, plus I just fancy a new toy. Would the Pocophone or something similar be a decent replacement? Or any other options up to around £3‐400 please? Thanks in advance.

I don't think any phone for 300-400 quid would be better than an s8.

I recently replaced my s8 with a OnePlus 7 pro and I'm pretty happy with the upgrade.

Thanks for the reply, as I say the S8 battery looks to be on its way out (or possibly the last software update had an effect!), so I'm looking to replace it and come off contract anyway, so it doesn't necessarily need to be better, but just as fast would be nice.

We are reaching that saturation point in the market where there isn't a lot of incentive to upgrade to the latest and greatest anymore.

That and there is a lot of great Chinese manufacturers pushing into mainstream, not to mention a solid second hand market.

Pixel 3a did come to mind and you will get better stills out of it, but it might be a sideways upgrade in many respects.

Pocophone F2 might be a good shout when it's officially out as it looks to be based on Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9t. You'll be gaining a triple camera setup, screen without notches or cutouts and up to date internals.

Also Carphone Warehouse do official Samsung repairs and will replace the battery for £39.99.

Maybe go for the regular OnePlus 7. Or maybe a deal on the 6t.

You can get a new s9+ for £410. It’s on a competitor site but you can find it via hotukdeals.

Also an s10e on a 5gb 24 month contract for £665 all in, with some free headphones if that’s enough data.

How would the Galaxy A70 compare ? £369 less £60 cashback from Samsung until 27th June I think. A midrange phone obviously, not high end.

Thanks for all the replies, some food for thought, although is it just me that thinks most of the phones suggested are HUGE?

The S8 is just the right size, anything bigger just starts to feel cumbersome, I think I might have a good look at the S10e as I switched the edge features off on mine on the first day...

Just ordered an S10e, £29 upfront, then £25 a month for unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, and 100gb of data, seems decent enough to me. :)

Got the same deal, if I'm not counting two phones I've returned recently then I'm coming from S7 Edge :D

Only slight niggle with that phone is the side fingerprint sensor, didn't enjoy it on the Xperia 1 as I check my phone often when it's lying on a desk.

Gotta compromise somewhere though as otherwise it has most things I want and frankly after P30 Pro and Xperia 1, I don't particularly want a big phone.

Also, headphone jack :p

Are phone contracts still 2 years? Last time I checked on EE, their new contracts are 3 years!

I got fed up of paying £48/month and didn't entertain getting locked in for 3 years. So I sacked that off and I'm now on sim-only with unlimited everything for £20/month. Like Tuvoc suggested, I give a +1 for the A70 which I took as a side-step from the S8+ (or as a downgrade from the S9 / S10 series). Aside more memory and a bigger screen, it keeps the SD slot, 3mm headphone jack and the always-on screensaver clock. 4500mAh battery as well which gives me 2 to 3 days. Almost as good as the Nokias from 20 years ago :D The only downside is the A70 camera isn't as good as the S8+. Make sure you use Gcam as that will do it more justice than the stock camera app. Also note that it has the camera notch on the screen like on the recent iPhones but I haven't noticed it too much when playing games on it.
