Hi, I’m looking to upgrade my son’s gaming PC. I’ve worked in IT for about 30 odd years. Go gentle on me.

PSU ATX-500B
MBD A320/DVS rev 4
RAM 24GB 2400
CPU AMD A6-9500
Graphics card Dual GTX1650 4G
1TB SSD
Windows 10

He is not looking to spend a fortune but would like some improvement. He thinks the PSU is not powerfull enough but I think CPU is the weak link.

Any thoughts?

The only things I'd re-use there are the graphics card and SSD, the rest all needs upgrading. The power supply is poor quality and not enough power, but won't net you an increase in performance if you upgrade it and it alone, only an increase in stability and not frames per second. The CPU, memory and board would need upgrading to see a performance increase, the GTX 1650 may even be bottlenecked by the A6-9500.

Depends on budget, but around 400-500 quid would get you something worthwhile.
