I'm thinking of an upgrade as it will be the last one for a while (emmigrating).

I currently have this setup.
AMD 64 3200
2GB GeIL Value (4x512)
X1800XT
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
Enermax Noisetaker 600w

What could I do for maximum performance increase and smallest amount of cash?

I look enviously at the new c2d intels and the corsair 6400c4 ram and the 8800gts but that would cost a bomb by my reckoning. I would like to spend as little as possible but I could maybe stretch to £250 if needed.

Could anyone estimate what I could sell my components for?

Thanks

If i were you, i would get an x2 and be content ;) Your rig really isn't bad, it must cut through all of the current games.

Ha, were very much in the same boat.

I think you should be able to get £70 for cpu and mobo, £100 for the ram and £100 for the 1800xt.

Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ULTIMATE SILENT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £
(£138.64)

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
(£145.69)

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
(£119.84)

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£72.84)

Sub Total : £405.96
Total : £486.70

That about £200 spend, but you can always keep your 1800xt. Still a very good card. I'm not even sure if the Pro is better than the 1800XT.

Yeh, it's fine tbh I'm just thinking as I won't be able to upgrade for maybe 2 years I'd squeeze in a small one now.

I was thinking of going for an opteron 170 and keeping the dfi mobo and perhaps upgrading my memory to the geil 6400 (if it's worth it)

Sorry mate, you cant buy the geil 6400 because it is ddr2. But an opty would do nicely. I'm gonna do a quick upgrade this weekend with any luck, skt 939 here i come. :D

An opteron 165 or 170 would probably overclock like a beast, 2.7-3.0GHz and usually with less voltage than say a x2 3800 etc. Make sure you research the steppings though if you're gonna get from somewhere like the bay. Check this - http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=96900

Go for the 170 if your not sure if you mobo will do 300+ HTT, as the 165 only has a x9 multiplier. I think your mobo should cut it though. Also, don't get an x1950 pro it's on par if not a little slower than what you've got already.

IMHO C2D might not be as good an option os many keep making them out to be.

Just look at the masses and masses of issues people keep putting out about them... It makes me wonder.

I got a 6300 and DS3 and sure enough, its a rock solid PC and walks all over my best AMD by a fair bit with some apps, not so much in a few and is actually slower with some apps too!

However, I have had a lot of issues... So much so, that I actually swapped it back with my AMD because it was that bad.

After a while though, I decided that I just wont use the apps that were problematic and instead I use them on the AMDs.

Now, if you already have Socket 939 gear, then it might be a better option for you to get a good CPU instead of swapping all your hardware about... Just in case you end up with a poor system as so many people seem to have?

I'm currently running an socket 754 AMD64 3000+ with an ageing geforce 6800GT AGP. I have the upgrade horn just now and i'm thinking of blowing £600 or so on upgrading mobo, gcard, ram and cpu and keeping the case/psu and other bits 'n pieces.

Thing is, my current computer runs perfectly for the applications I use, but I think it might struggle with vista and struggle majorly with 2007's new batch of games. Guess it probably is time to upgrade as I can't do sweet-fa with this motherboard tbh!

Yeah I've had a look at it thanks. I'm aiming at something along these lines: E6300, Asus P5N-E SLi, 2gb Crucial anni, BFG 8800 GTS - comes to around £580 exc. vat (it'll be put through my company).

I'll probably have to upgrade my PSU though which is causing me annoyance. Have a 460W Akasa, if i do buy this kit i'd like it overclocked to at least 2.8-3GHz minimum, so I guess I definately would need a higher rated PSU?

My DS3 has a Hyper 480
It has 4x512MB Geil 6400, running at 480FSB
I have 4xDVDRW, 2x80GB + 2x250GB + 1x40GB IDE
TV Card, IDE Card and an XFI

I think that a 460w will cut it as long as you dont go thick like I have done.
