I was wondering what the best options were to upgrade my system which I haven't touched for a while. Current specs:

Tagan 480w PSU
Abit IP35 Pro XE
E6600
2 Gig PC2-5300 (2x 1024)
Radeon HD 4850

Not really thinking about upgrading everything, perhaps the video card and maybe adding more memory. Open to any suggestion though if they'd make a difference.

Only really play WoW game wise.

Thanks in advance :)

2x2GB looks like a good start.

After that, cheap second hand quad.

After that your really into new GPU and possibly PSU depending on the spec and budget.

You could get 1066 memory but the price of ddr2 1066 has remained relatively high. Almost to the point where you feel like waiting until you can upgrade to i5 as it won't be worth it. Maybe try and look for second hand 1066 4gb for cheap, to see you through until the next upgrade where you can buy new mb and ddr 3.

if you upgrade graphics, at least it would work in a ddr3 m/b so a gfx card upgrade would last.

I'll keep an eye out for some used 1066 - Still seems to be £90 new.

Are there any used g.cards for around £50 mark that could replace the 4850 I have?

Would buying a quad give a good improvement? any idea how much these are used?

Thanks

From what I remember WoW is quite happy on a dual core, not sure if they've managed to put any multi core optimisation into the expansion though. You're not going to get anything massively better than your current card for £50, however if you sold your current card you could increase your budget a bit maybe?

  • Intel® Core™2 Duo E6600
  • Abit IP35 Pro XE
  • 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-666
  • Radeon HD 4850
  • Tagan 480w PSU

Overclock that chip! :)

Intel® Core™2 Duo E6600
  • 9 x 266 = 2394
  • 9 x 333 = 2997

Kingston HyperX 4GB

£72.84 inc

a 4GB used set of DDR2-1066 would be better . . . £50?

Cheers for the new replies.

I'm actually quite ashamed to say that (for some reason) I've not clocked the chip....even bought the IP35 and started a thread with a view to doing so lol. I'll have a go this weekend :D

I'll pop a wanted add in MM for some 1066, see what that brings. Failing that I might buy new at the price you found
