its a tough one because the way i see it £250 could buy you a new Mobo, chip a some more ram but at what performance increase.... can you stretch to £300? and are you happy with your 9800GTX?

Are you going to SLI in the future?
Also what is your operating system, 32 or 64 bit?

Welcome to the forums also :D

If you did want to go for it now then just have a look at a new mobo, P45 chipset and a new CPU, for gaming go fo C2D, you could get gigabyte m/b £80 and an e5200 CPU for £70 with a decent cooler for £20 total £170
OC your CPU and you should see a nice speed increase

os xp32bit
may sli if i ad a sli mobo that could take 2 9800gtx+
would need a new motherboard and psu to sli

never overclocked in my life and wouldn't know were to start
thanks connectionFX and 95thrifles

TBH you can forget about SLI'ing, the boards that support SLI are pretty poor, unless you start looking at the new x58, the old nforce boards have a few problems, and theyre a lot more expensive anyway. You could go for an Asus P5QPro board which supports crossfire, it would give you room in future to upgrade your gfx card if you decided to.
