my brothers looking to upgrade his pc. at the moment, hes running an athlon 64 3000- socket 939, gigabyte ga-k8nf-9 and 1gb of geil value ram. hes adament that getting a 512mb 7900gtx will make all the difference in the world, but im not sure personally. as you can tell, none of us really knows our stuff. hes got £300-£400 to spend. what upgrades would you recommend? hes after better overall performance and increased gaming capabilities.

thanks

Would make a difference, but not really without 2gb ram for the larger textures the games would want to shine.

Otherwise it will be bottlenecked by the ram in games.

What resolution do you game at?

depends on the game.1024 by 768 on something like doom3 for example. So what suggestions do you make. maybe a slower card and investing in more ram. also, think hes only got a 350w psu, so would that present a problem if he got a card like a 512mb 7900?

I think what Mr. Yewen meant was what is the native resolution of his monitor. Thought it's probably possible to run on that PSU I wouldn't do it with my own kit.

That card is way overkill for that resolution.

I have a 7800gt and it runs everything I have tried including Oblivion maxed out at 1280 x 1024 with more than playable frame rates, bf2 I got 70+ all the time.

For that monitor resolution such a powerful card would be a waste, save your money and get a card AND a monitor, and you would be in a better situation. :)

2gb of ram, GSkill, Corsair, or there's some nice looking OCZ plantium stuff around the same price with tighter timings.

Along with an x1800xt 256mb.

Should keep the system going at that resolution no problem. Thats what i'd do anyway.

Should work out around £300, maybe just over with delivery.

Or depending on the games you like to play you could get a monitor and 1800xt for the money, and game at the higher resolution.

2gb ram would be preferable for some games and almost all future releases though.
