Upgrade time....finally

Looking to upgrade my aging system(built it about 6 years ago..:eek:) and although I've read up a bit I'm a bit out of the loop....
I've been looking @ cpu/mobo bundles that I can drop(not literally) a 4790k into.
Is there a lot of difference in performance between the main Z97 brands? Or do you pick a favourite brand or the onboard extras(ports et al)?

I'm coming from a Core 2 duo X6800. The cpu is ok but my motherboard is starting to fail. Doesn't always boot and I get random errors e.g. usb ports not recognising devices.
I've tried a borrowed power supply but the result is the same....
 
So come on then....Asus, Gigabyte or MSI?
I know in the past Asus have a good rep for reliability and warranty, MSI less so. Things changed or still the same??
 
ASUS boards are solid and so is MSI. I have owned both as well as Gigabyte and all been great. Which ever one you prefer the look/colour of
 
ive only had msi boards only had one prob with a bricked bios update but they changed board under a rma and was done within a week, i had the z87m and now a z97m but upgrading in next month myself, would like to keep with msi but looking to go with evga for a change but msi worth a look.
