Upgrade time, from S8 plus to.. ?

As always I say I don't need to upgrade, this phone is fine I'll just keep it and go SIM only. Alas, upgrade time has rolled round and I'm looking at handsets.

I'm not against trying something new (I.e. not the S10) but if that's the one to go for then it makes sense.

Keep hearing about the Huawei P30 but maybe that's a bit too different?

What's the one to go for currently?

Currently spend about £40 a month and that comes with Spotify which we use loads. To lose that it would cost 9.99 a month own to subscribe again. (I'm on vodafone)

Save your money and spend it on something you need. If you don't need to upgrade and your S8 is working fine.
 
It is a bit like that isn't it? I'm not set on upgrading by any means just weighing options.

If I leave the contract to run out, does it effectively cut in half cost wise as I will no longer be paying for the phone portion?

Well if you do nothing they will just continue to charge you what you are paying just now on a rolling monthly basis. You can get a SIM only deal on a 1 or 12 month basis or you could tell them you want to take a new contract but not upgrade the phone which should lower your monthly cost considerably, however it really depends on what they offer.
 
Meh, nothing really worth upgrading to at the moment. Pixel would have been a good shout if the UI was actually usable...

Horrendous gesture system :(
 
Yeah I'm going to go sim only. Partner gets me 15% off from her employer so will just go for a cost effective option and wait it out a bit

I always say I don’t need to upgrade when my contracts up and the longest I’ve lasted is 2 months. I’m due for renewal in June and I’m determined this time.


I’ll relent eventually.
 
The Pixel 3's gestures aren't the best, but they aren't THAT bad! :D My biggest gripe really is the way they still take up screen real estate. There are signs that this is going to change with Android Q to a more iPhone-like bar at the bottom instead which will be better, and the Pixel 3 will get it.

That said, I would not buy a Pixel 3 now because the specs are too poor as a phone to spend a few years with in 2019, especially the RAM (I'm getting a lot more app reloads on my 2XL these days). If you want a Pixel, wait for the 4, probably on a black friday deal!

On the home screen, if you flick up to open the app drawer, what does it open?

You now have to slide it up slowly to open the drawer, or double swipe; that's poor design considering Google have been using the swipe up gesture for at least a year. I couldn't get used to it on my Pixel 2 XL, hence the switch to iOS until Google sorted it out :-)

Tbh I don't think it's a RAM thing as much as it is a memory management one; I didn't have apps reopening on older phones with <4GB of RAM, and have seen apps having to reload on devices with 6GB of RAM. On iOS, I get A LOT of apps reloading

Well on my phone flicking up displays the app drawer because I disabled the gestures :D Not because I thought the gestures were unusable but more because I was used to the buttons and they look better, if you're going to lose those pixels at the bottom of the screen then they may as well have some buttons there rather than just a pill and nothing else.

Although I can count on one hand how many times I use the app drawer anyway. I just tend to hit the search bar and type, and find it easier and quicker.

To be fair, I do see where you're coming from though, and I would tend to agree they could be better, but I haven't really seen any Android alternatives that were what I consider to be massively better. Like for example people go on about the samsung system but their gestures just hide the buttons and replace with swipes, which isn't intuitive.

I even used an iPhone XR for a couple of days when I was getting annoyed with the Pixel, and yeah the gestures are the best of the (bad) bunch but even there I found the back gesture infuriating, often requiring more than one swipe to get it to work. It was almost that alone that put me off. What's easier, pressing a back button or trying and failing to get the swipe to register? I certainly did appreciate the extra screen real estate though.

As said elsewhere, as per usual with Android there are always some workarounds anyway.

As for the RAM thing you could be right, I did suspect it might be a battery saving feature, or it could be that certain apps (FB, IG I'm looking at you) tend to refresh just so you see different content to keep you browsing it. I never understood why 4Gb RAM shouldn't be enough for a smartphone, when 8Gb did my gaming PC just fine (I upgraded anyway and noticed sod all difference).
 
Finally just went sim only yesterday. Had to wait until the contract ended on the 10th for those deals to appear. Was really tempted to get a new handset contract but the ones I would have gone for were looking roughly around £50-55 a month.

So keeping my S8+ and gone with the 15gb data with a year of spotify. Also getting the John Lewis discount off of that making it roughly £21 a month. Considering spotify is 9.99 on it's own I'm fairly happy with that as I use it loads since having it on my last bundle.

I like that the contracts are only 12 months so can look at handsets next year when they may have advanced that extra bit more. They did say you can upgrade to a new phone from sim only after 3 months of needed but I imagine it's not that straightforward. Phones have hit a level now where they just seem to be improving in small ways but then it's been like that for years
