Upgrade time - GPU the answer?

Both the KFA2 OEM GTX780 and MSI R9 290 cards are great deals for the price.

Remember they both come with game codes which can net a further £20 to £30 after being sold.

So you could a GTX780 for close to £170 and a R9 290 for close to £190.

Would the 3gb vram be an issue in near future?

Considering that one recent AAA title expected 6GB of VRAM for Ultra textures(not really worth it TBH IMHO),ultimately I have a feeling 3GB won't be significantly more limiting than 4GB unless you really are pushing the resolution somewhat.

I expect the current 28NM cards from AMD and Nvidia to be short lived since we overdue with the 20NM/16NM ones and I expect it will happen in the next year and a bit. A potential £90 saving upfront is better put towards a later generation card with a bigger performance bump. 28NM cards have been out since late 2011,which means we are coming to the end of the usage of this node, and the next generation nodes will bring performance and density improvements.

Proberly best bet is pick up a second hand 290/780 for now and wait for 20nm, seen 780's and 290's going for £150 and even slightly less

Hi guys.

My system is getting old and wasn't very high spec to start with. I'm running an i5 2500K at about 4.2ghz and have a 6950 with 6970 shaders unlocked. I'm getting back into my games after a year or so off and wondered how best to spend up to £200 (or maybe 10% extra) to give me a boost. I'm assuming the GPU is the best bet.

A 280, 280x, 290? A 770, a cheapo 780, or break the bank for a 970? I have no idea where the value lies unfortunately and would appreciate some help.

Thanks

I was in a similar boat,ie 2500K CPU overclocked to 4.4 GHz with MSI 560Ti Nvidia card, anyway I got a Sapphire dual X OC 280X for £127 and have been with with that, nice stop gap until I can see what the R9 390s do next year and also later new models from Nvidia ,coil whine put me off 970.
