Friend is looking to upgrade their old cpu and mothorboard along with ram. Was thinking i5 or i7 with 8gb of ram. Just wondering what he should go for. Budget would be just under £400

So you would recommend an i5 with a more expensive motherboard over an i7 and a cheaper one? Cooler is not an issue as he already owns one
 
The cost difference between an i5 and i7 is considerable and not required if gaming. You could choose either motherboard below and pair it to whatever version of i5 / i7 takes your fancy. If SLI / XFire then either MSI would be a good choice

Okay, thanks! Pretty certain i5 will be the way to go, and the msi boards seem pretty well spec wise, think he may go with gugabyte after being a previous gugabyte owner and having good experience with them
