Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599)
Coolermaster CM-690 II Advanced Dominator Case

I have had this system for 27 months now and am looking to upgrade it over the next few months. I have around £1500 to spend on a new pc/upgrade.

I am not sure I need a new PC or am I just better off getting a new gfx card for this one? I would like to get myself a server with some of the cash with perhaps a couple of 3tb drives so it might be that I just upgrade.

What I am trying to ask is if its worth £1500 getting a new pc and then using my current one to build a HTPC/NAS out of it? If a new PC is warrented what sort of thing do you people think I should go for? I had read that haswell wasnt really the upgrade that people where expecting.

I would just get a new graphics card. The 2500K overclocked is close to Haswell in general performance.

You don't need anything like those specs for an HTPC/NAS. You could build a separate PC for that for not very much at all.

If you want a big upgrade then maybe one of the 7970s currently on offer. Or you could wait until the 9970 is released and splash out on that.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. If I am honest I would like to get a new gfx card and perhaps build a HTPC around my old 6950 if that would save me some money then I could get the nas all sorted with a microserver and some drives.

I'd just sell the 6950 if you upgrade. You can build an HTPC around a really basic card, or just an AMD APU, and use much less power.

You know your motherboard and PSU could handle xfire right?

Grab another 6950 (should be able to get one from the MM for £80-£90).. That will have a huge increase on your FPS. :)

Only other thing i could think of is a bigger SSD but thats just 'cosmetic' really.

My vote is for ANOTHER 6950. :)

I suppose x-fire is an option what is the speed like when compared with something like a 7970? as that is what I am thinking. A 6950 would deffo be a cheaper option and one that would be wife approved as well for now. I could perhaps wait another twelve months then and see what is availible then.

I would, if you can wait another 12 to 18 months and then DDR4 memory and PCI-E 4.0 is on the horizon..

Your right in thinking about new graphics.

The 6950 would be cheaper but Xfire may cause problems and issues. Where as a single card (7950/7970) will cost you more but cause less issues.

If you don't mind going red to green The pre-order GTX 670 may suit you.

Under £200 and performance in the middle of the 7950/7970

Bringing this one back up I am really liking the look of one of these.

along with perhaps one of these.

How would they fair with my system specs as above? will it work with my motherboard? Will it fit in the case? Also would upgrading my ram to 8gig help with everyday running on the PC? I might get a better CPU cooler and look to increase the overclock a little. I sometimes run my 6950 to my TV via HMDI I assume that will still work with one of the DP ports if I get a DP to HDMI adapter?

After posing the above, do you think it might be worth waiting for the 9770? or whatever else is coming along in a few months time?
