Hi,

Im looking to upgrade my PC or more precisely, my CPU but realise its not just a new purchase for a CPU. The motherboard ASUS Z87-K with Intel Core i7 4700K, 4 x 8Gb DDR3 Team Group DDR3 Ram, EGVA Nvida Gefore GTX TitanX 12Gb and a PCI-E 750GB SSD - cpu cooling is provided by a Corsair H55.

After initial checks, I think Im going to need a new motherboard to accommodate the proposed i9 processor but wondering if I need anything else due to compatibility issues.

So motherboard needs to accept my existing ram, PCI SSD, Graphix card and allow me to attach my existing cooling system to the new cpu.

Any advice on best way forward with this project would be appreciated.

Thanks
DW

Gaming mainly - I thought I'd might need new RAM. Ive not picked a motherboard yet but if I dont want to purchase new ram then it will have to backward compatible with DDR3 but I dont believe thats an option so it looks like I will have to replace RAM as well as CPU and MB?

Hi welcome

If you can hold off for another 5 or 6 weeks then the B550 boards from AMD should be available (Due on the 16th June), and also Intel will have the 14nm+++++++++++ cpu's out and Z490 boards by then.

You will find that AMD offers the better value for money though.

If you don't want to wait for B550 you could do something like this. You would still have support for Ryzen 4000 as well.

So later on down the road you could upgrade to a 12 or 16 core R9 3900X/R9 3950X or R9 4900X/R9 4950X. If you don't mind losing support for Ryzen 4000 then an MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX saves another £80, or more if you shop around.

The Ram is a placeholder. I would actually go with the Patriot 3200MHz CL16 but it is out of stock at the minute.

Wow there is some great advice here guys - thanks you so far.

So I can see some suggestions on coolers - would I be able to reuse my Cosair Watercooler on the new rig? Also, the kit is being mounted on acrylic plate and mounted on a wall - I want to limit the noise of the fans - currently I only have one fan on the water cooler and the fans on the titan gfx card - this is all mounted in a Corsair PC case which additional sound proofing - the noise output is bearable but I can hear it whirling a way but its doesnt annoy me - going for a clear acrylic wall mounted case I would lose the sound proofing properties of the Cosair Case - any thoughts on this challenge or should this be started in another thread on the forum?w
