Upgrade time: What to go for?

^ In your dreams Samsung fanboy (Samboy?) ;):D

The One S is quite a bit faster, has much better battery life, runs 5-10C cooler, thinner, has a full aluminium unibody, takes better pics etc. Sure the screen and video recording is about the same but that's it.
Shame HTC totally gimped it with storage, no wonder you've got poor EU sales stupid fools. The phone is technically faster than nearly all netbooks for goodness sake, yet you give it 10GB of storage?

...and then you give your international flagship Tegra 3? Don't get me started on that one!

Yes faster in benchmarks - but how much faster in real life?
Aesthetics are personal preference - I prefer the S2 and it's brilliantly built.
Camera quality is on par.
HOS Run's cooler only when getting hammered.
HOS -Yes it thinner - but it's all so taller.
Video recording is markedly better on the S2 - Light metering, sharpness and smoothness.
Batterylife is great on the S2 with the EXT. Battery. 4hrs+ screen on time.
I prefer TW to Sense too.

Samboy > Soni-boy :p

- Stock ROMs compared on both devices (ICS based), quite a bit faster I found. The mobile just felt more instant/snappier than the GS 2 for everything.

Obviously a custom ROM on the GS 2 will probably close the gap, but then again putting a custom ROM on the 1S would make it even quicker as well then, especially if it is a stock ICS ROM?

- Whilst there might not be a huge difference in the camera on all top end phones nowadays, the features that are brought by sense V4 put it ahead of the competition IMO. Personally I love the camera UI on sense V4 and then you get all the neat features/effects that are actually quite cool and useful (love the slow motion recording :D), which aren't found on any other phone brands or 3rd party apps and if they are, they don't seem to be as good of quality compared to the sense versions IMO.

The one S does take better photos than the GS 2, not a massive difference in quality though.

- Actually the 1S doesn't get hot at all I have noticed when playing games where as on my bro's desire and friends GS 2 the mobile does get a bit warm, not an issue really though.

- The good thing about the one S design is that it is pretty small and feels nice to hold in the hand despite having a 4.3" screen where as the GS 2 feels a bit bigger (wider) and not as comfortable due to it being a rectangle slab. Plus the actual feel of the 1S is much better IMO. And there really is no denying that it looks and feels far more "premium" than the GS 2.

But as said personal preference this area.

- The sharpness for 1080P recording I find is pretty much the same, only the jerkiness and light metering that is the problem :(

- Screen wise, the 1S I found to be quite a bit better in terms of sharpness and colours, the colours aren't as vibrant as the GS 2, which personally I prefer. Also you get some more screen real estate (not a huge amount more, but still nice nonetheless), which is a bonus.

EDIT 2: - Also you get a notification LED with the one s, but be warned it is a cheap and tacky way that HTC have implemented it! :p But again, nice to have it anyway :p

- The audio is also better

From GSMarena:

The cleanest audio output we have seen

The HTC One S performance in our audio quality test came as a really pleasant surprise to us. It appears that the Beats influence hasn't been limited to a single equalizer preset this time as the smartphone delivers the cleanest output we have seen from any device so far.

When connected to an active external amplifier, the HTC One S audio is simply flawless - volume levels are a little above average and it got excellent scores on every part of our test.

What's most impressive though is the One S retains virtually the same performance when you plug in a pair of headphones. The stereo crosstalk takes the tiniest dip of any smartphone we've seen so far, while the rest of the readings are either totally unaffected or worsen by an undetectable amount. Volume levels remain the same too, so it's arguably the most impressive overall performance to date.

- You really have to use sense for a few days to appreciate what it offers. I used to hate sense, but since seeing and using sense V4 (even before I got my S) I really liked it unlike every other custom skin. At first, before I got the S, I was expecting to just replace all the apps with 3rd party ones straight away, but I didn't and still haven't; still use the gallery app as it is super smooth and quick with a nice UI and great features, loads of editing tweaks built in; still use the phone dialer and SMS app as I like the UI and the features that you get with the phone dialer; still use the clock/alarm app due to a nice UI and packed with features along with the calendar etc. due to the same reasons.

I would also stick with using the stock browser for the same reasons, however, ICS browser + is a bit quicker overall so I use it instead :p

Only using custom widgets and apex for the launcher now and swiftkey beta 3 instead.

Touchwiz has some great tweaks under the bonnet though and does run very light compared to most other custom skins, it is just a shame about the UI/colour scheme/modded apps, only like there calendar app :p

Saying that you won't be disappointed with whatever phone you go for especially since the san fran was your previous phone :p,

If storage, better 1080P recording for quality and better battery life (only with the extended batt) is very important for you then get the GS 2.

Actually how much weight and bulk does the extended batt add kona?

You will need to play with both devices again to get a feel for sense and touchwiz. You can look at my 1S review (in sig) to get a look at what sense V4 will be like, if you aren't already familiar with it.

EDIT:

3,000 posts! :D

Thing is, I'm coming from a Sanfran, so the SII is going to be leagues ahead of it anyway :)

I'll do some further reading and see which one I prefer, 16GB should be enough, just i'd like the option to have more if possible really

Coming from something rubbish is a pretty feeble reason to not get the better (if storage isn't an issue) phone

I reckon you'll only see the snappiness difference if you go form the One S to the S2 - because in isolation the S2 is very fast.

I never use my phone as a music player so not a biggie for me.

I like the look/deign of the One S (prefer the grey more to black model) - but the all black S2 does it for me.

Extended battery makes the phone flush with the bump on the bottom - helps protect the camera when on the table too. Adss about 10grams in weight I think, so makes it feel a bit more substantial.

The One S needed a sd slot, rgb/720p screen and smoother video camera to make it a real step up from the S2 IMO.

Not really, I've used the Samsung personally, and I like it :)

Every time i've mentioned HTC to someone they say 'ooooooh don't get those, I've sent mine back three times already'...And that's coming from someone who's owned two now :p

And whats this extended battery malarky?

I don't use it as a music player too much either, but I do use it for watching quite a lot of youtube videos, tv catchup etc. and the sound is better than the GS 2 here as well, has a more punchy/kick effect to it.

Not bad then considering the extra batt life you would get.

Yeah either a SD card or more internal storage.

Storage wasn't a problem for me, would have liked to have had more but considering I am not a huge music person (Just having a look at my entire music collection on the PC and it is only about 5.5 GB anyway :p that is including a few albums, which are FLAC :p and one album, which is just near 900MB in size and another at 800MB :o), it doesn't prove to be too much of an issue:

Over 500 photos including lots of 1080P recordings, along with emulator files, wallpapers etc. over 60 apps installed (including games) and this is what I still have remaining:

IIRC the reason HTC went with the pentile matrix for the S was due to it supposedly being better than the RGB matrix for battery life, no idea if that is true though, but I think Samsung said the same thing for the GS 3 as well. HTC apparently tweaked the pentile matrix/screen for the S as well, there was an article on gsmarena showing photos etc. compared to the GS 2 screen etc.

Unfortunately it is a HTC "thing", all HTC handsets seem to have the light metering and jerkiness problems :( Hopefully a custom ROM can fix or at least improve it.

The panel in the One S is made by Samsung. I think a high ppi SAMOLED+ screen is still quite a challenge for Samsung.

The black HOS model does show fingerprints and scruff marks quite easily on the metal back.

To be honest, just spend a tiny bit more and get the Galaxy S 3, that way you'll have no doubts over anything, and you'll probably like the design etc.

No can do.

Can't afford to pay a lump sum for a phone, and I certainly can't afford a £25/£30 contract ;)

I'm trying to save money here, not spend more! :p

Hence why the SGSII for £15 a month is a bargain for me.

Just go for that then if you're happy with it! There are no glaring flaws with it or anything to worry about so it's fairly sensible.

It's no good getting a One S if you think you might find the storage to be a problem in future.

£16 a month for HTC one S on talkmobile from CPW. (£35.25 cashback with topcashback too

200 mins
500 txt
unlimited data (no tethering)

I was very tempted but still got 5 months on my t-mobile sim only and CPW wouldn't buy me out or anything.

Have they said why though?

And what phone it was?

He could be returning the phone and the shop may just be handing him some other device that was also returned or just handing one from a faulty batch.

HTC are top notch for quality handsets and still are and were considered to be the very best brand for android for quite a while especially with their desire handset until Samsung released the GS 2 and then things went downhill with their new phones such as the desire HD and sensation etc. but have now hopefully turned things around again with the one series especially as Samsung's flagship isn't that spectacular either.

Like all phones/tech devices, there are always problems and no company is any better than the other. Remember many people reporting problems with the GS 2 screen, battery life problems etc. even the iphone has its problems regarding signal, some people getting bad battery life and screen problems to.

There also seems to be more problems on the stock ICS touchwiz ROM on the GS 2 than there was on stock GB touchwiz ROM from what I have read in the GS 2 thread.

The only well documented issues, which some have with the S is the following:

- chipping issue with the black model, but there is a new design out now that should fix the problem and the grey hasn't got a problem with this at all
- signal issues, new update out (2nd one), no word yet really as to if it is fixed, but as usual you have people who say it is and isn't so far....
- multi-tasking, problem with software and sense not just on the S but all one series mobiles

However, the above I have not experienced at all apart from chipping around the USB port. Haven't experienced the multi-tasking problem as I have disabled a lot of sense stuff and apps that I have no need for. Can see my reply to those problems in detail here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27056580#post27056580

Also don't forget that it is even more likely that people will experience problems when the device is brand new as opposed to a device that has been around for the last year now, therefore plenty of time for the company to fix any problems via software updates, change in design etc.

At the end of the day you seem to be happy with the GS 2, so go for it! :)

I know, but HTC said they applied some additional tweaks to it themselves IIRC. Will try to find the gsmarena article.

Probably is.

Yeah that is true, haven't noticed any scruff marks with mine yet though, just greasy looking marks and finger prints but then it is the same for pretty much every mobile anyway :(

I'd say the majority of people who are having problems with ICS roms didn't bother to do a factory reset after doing the update.

GB to ICS is like trying to do an upgrade path from XP to 7 it will never go smoothly.

That is just my opinion on that though.

Yeah that is what I thought at first as well, but there are still quite a few that have done a factory reset and still appear to have more problems and reduced smoothness than they did on 2.3.

I always start from scratch after a big update like going from GB to ICS. Only way to be sure! :p :D
