I am thinking of upgrading the 'office' comp. The current configuration:

  • 2500+
  • 1.5 GB DDR PC4000
  • ATI 8500 AGP
  • Epox M'Board
  • Tagan 480W PSU
  • Plenty of HDD/DVD Drives
  • SB Audigy 2 PCI

This is what I want to get:

  • OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)
  • Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
  • BFG nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Total : £516.96

Not sure about the memory/mboard options for a medium spec pc. Would be nice to be able to play CofH @ 1280x1024.

That would be enough to play COH at that reso.

Thanks, I kind of figured.

Really wanted advice regarding mobo/memory and whether it was a little bit of overkill for a pc that will spend most of its life online surfing and word processing!

I was gonna say, you have chosen really good components, and will you be overclocking? I would imagine you would get a decent overclock out of those components, Maybe change your mobo for a ds3 (which is cheaper and on special offer this week iirc) as I'm not too sure how well the 680 boards clock (though Im sure its quite well). As you said yourself it does seem a bit overkill for a PC that will be doing just surfing and word processing, but then again its up to you. Also the parts chosen will be fine to run COH at that resolution.

EDIT: Also for the memory it really depends on whether you are going to overclock, then stick with that (I don't know how well it will clock) or if not then go for something cheaper such as the OCuK value DDR2 stuff.

Having just brought an e6300 meself can I suggest you get an aftermarket HSF as the stock ones are ok but if your planning to overclock your need the extra cooling. Of course this will depend on what revison chip you get.

Good spec though.

680 mobo is pure overkill if you are not going to sli or do stupid OC. So swap that mobo to DS3 and RAM to OCUK 2Gb value as said and you'll still be able to OC to 2.8Ghz at least. Saves you a lot of money, yes and get a freezer 7 pro.

Thanks for the advice guys. Been thinking, and now I think I want more! I want to upgrade my 'gaming' rig (which will then become the office comp (x24800, 3gb ram) with something a little faster and overclock it!

What do you guys make of this:

Intel E6600 C2D
BFG 680i
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)

X1900XT (already got this - will upgrade to ATi DX10 equivalent)

Will the memory be fine for OC'ing or do I need something faster/more expensive?
