Upgrade time?

My current spec is:

Antec P182 case
Asus Maximus Formula Mobo
Intel C2Q Q6600 @ 3.6
2 x 2GB ram
ATI 4870 X2
Intel X25M 80Gb SSD Gen 2
2 x 120GB Storage HDs in RAID
Corsiar 650 watt PSU

Its way more than 2 years old now (prob 3-3.5) except for the SSD and ATI card which are about 2 years old. I normally upgrade every 2 years but this has served me well. I have £1,000 to spend on upgrade but not sure if its a waste of money. In the past I have noticed huge differences when upgrading especially to this system but not so sure now. I play various games on a 24" screen which I wont be upgrading. What do you think?

Sounds like a decent rig to me. Any games giving you major troubles? Are you unhappy with the quality of some games?

I think as long as it plays what you want to play well, and as long everything works good, you should wait for a bit longer.

Maybe a 580/6950 (depending on how much you want to spend) and a 1Tb HDD?? (If that space is needed of course)

No problems in games but thinking about BF3 out soon-ish and also like general productivity to be ultra quick. I am the McD's generation. I hate waiting!!!

What about a RAM drive PCI Express card. Do they give a good jump?

6990 is your best bet, the rest of your spec is solid only the GPU is letting you down

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

If it starts to struggle with several titles then that's your cue to upgrade.

4870x2 is still a good card and will still prob max out most titles at 1080p

true true, whe the time comes, GPU upgrade is the best solution as his Q6600 is still a beast even with newr games.
