Hi, looking to buy a new graphics card, at the moment i have a nvidia gtx 295 card.

always been an nvidia fan, so don't want and advice on the ati stuff, as i think the driver support from nvidia is better.

was looking at

MSI GeForce GTX 580 Lightning 1536MB

or do i go for a

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 590 3072MB GDDR5

many thanks Paul

Avoid the GTX590, as it is problematic as lots of people have theirs end up burned.

The GTX580 Lightning however is worth considering if you can afford.

But if you got a good enough PSU (i.e. a decent brand 950W or above) and a SLI capable board and a decent airflow case, then for the same money as the GTX580 Lightning, you'd get much better performance with a pair of Gigabyte GTX480 SOC.
