Upgrade time?

Lately I've been toying with the idea of upgrading my PC, however having been out of the loop for so long I'd like some advice on how best to spend my money if I do decide to proceed as I'm also looking to buy my first house next year.

My current setup is somewhat dated and realising that I can't even play newish games as it doesn't meet the minimum requirement got me researching, my current setup is:

Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATXMotherboard
Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4
Powercolor Radeon RX 5700 XT Red Devil 8GB GDDR6PCI-Express Graphics Card

I've been looking at the AMD RX 7800 XT or even the RX 7900 GRE but I think that boils down to the cost of the processor and I'm assuming I'd need a new motherboard. Gaming isn't my primary hobby but when I move house I won't be able to afford to have a workshop and all the equipment so I may then spend more of my free time gaming. Wondering if you lovely people could point me in the right direction.

Most newer games should be alright with the PC you have, at least, they will be playable. The ones that are not are likely to need a new CPU, motherboard, memory and graphics card.

They're around twice as fast, so all good there. The 7800 XT is going down under £450 too.

If you want to keep your memory you'd need to go AM4 or 1700, e.g. a 12600K/KF or 12700K/12700KF if you prefer Intel. I would avoid Intel 13th-14th gen. If you don't care about your memory, I'd be looking at a Ryzen 7500F or 7600.

I don't mind sacrificing the memory I have if buying something slightly newer would ensure it's a little bit more 'future proof'. I use that term lightly, I know it's a fools game to keep up with how fast things change.

If you plan to pair it with a 7800 XT, then it is not important.

AM5 is likely to have better future upgradability though, so if you're willing to buy 32GB (2x16) of DDR5 I'd get the 7500F or 7600. The 7700 has received BIG discounts elsewhere, but we don't seem to have received them yet in the UK.

Excluding GPU

Your talking either a £200 upgrade reusing your old memory or a £400 ish upgrade to go AM5 either way you should claw back around £100+ for your old CPU and board.
