Upgrade to E6550 for Encoding?

I am currently ripping and encoding all my DVDs, and I believe that the processor is the most important component for this type of work?

If I was to just replace the processor (currently a E6550 @2.33) for something more modern/powerful, would this have a significant effect on the time it takes to encode my DVDs to Xvid?

If so, say my budget is somewhere around £100 (not including cooling) what would be my best option for the biggest improvement?
 
Number of options.

1st I'd overclock the nuts off that CPU and see if that makes you happy.
Or
Sell the old cpu, put £100 + proceeds from sale towards either a fast Core2duo (8400-8500) or a slow Core2quad (Q6700)

Also depends on your motherboard and whether it will support the 1333Mhz fsb cpus
 
Quads pretty much destroy even overclocked dual cores in encoding.

Q6600 would be best bang/buck

Never OCd so that could be interesting :) have been reading the guides on here though and doesn't look too taxing. I will need a new cooler though as I am running on the reference hsf atm!

No idea, at work so can't quote the mobo name etc, its an Asus from about a year ago, P5k something I believe
 
For encoding I would say get a Q6600/Q6700 whichever is cheaper at the time, quads are much better than dual cores for encoding. Youll still get 3Ghz min out of either of those quads if you want to try OCing.

OK so say I get a 6600/6700, what HSF are people currently recommending? Again, a sensible price/effectiveness balance would be good :)
 
Arctic Freezer 7/Akasa 965 can be had for about £15 and will do the job just fine so long as your not heading for huge OCs. Did a build for a mate using a B3 Q6600 and the AF7 sees it fine at 3Ghz.

And in fact if you are not aiming for high overclocks, the stock cooler on the q6xx cpus is fine for 3ghz.

And another vote for getting a q6600/6700 as even with a great overclocking 8400/8500, a q6600 at 3ghz will eat even a 8500 at 4.5Ghz for breakfast at encoding.

Win XP, with Handbrake encoding to MKV H264.

It's a P5KC mobo (cant seem to OC the chip manually for some reason, am relying on N.O.S. atm which seams to be doing an OK job) and 2gb of ram (the speed escapes me atm, sorry.
 
3.6ghz q6600 vs 4-4.2ghz e8500 the q6600 would be on top.

Not many E8500s can do 4.5ghz stable. (i know, I've been through just a few ;) )

However, I agree...if you just want to encode your collection and once you're done you want the CPU for general use and gaming....the E8500 is better IMO.

Well you said Xvid originally. I think that handbrake is optimized for SSE4 but it's worth checking.

As Gurusan says, it's worth thinking about what else you use your PC for.
 
Doh! you are of course correct!

Ive been trying out both to see what the quality vs. size turns out to be.

The PC is use for light gaming, Office type stuff, and encoding, that's it really...
 
It might be worth looking into the Q8200. It won't clock that well, as it only has a 7x multi, but you don't seem too into that. It should do 2.8-3ghz though.

It's as fast as the Q6600, at stock speeds, when encoding without SSE4 and obviously quite a bit faster with SSE4. Best of both worlds maybe?
