Hi there

Running an Intel E8500 and generally game in 1600 x 1200 with 4AA/16AF.
Am I right in thinking that I am GPU limited at that resolution ??

Should I upgrade to a GTX 285 from my GTX 260 ??

Appreciate your opinions

cheers

I personally think this would be a pointless upgrade... if your mobo supports SLI you should purchase another GTX260...

No. The current high end cards arn't worth the money over the price/performance the GTX 260/ATI 4890 offer. You are paying a lot more money for not enough extra performance. On Tom's hardware, in their June roundup of graphics cards where they offer the best card for each price bracket they don't recomend ANY $320+ card:

Best PCIe Card For ~$320: None

With rapidly-increasing prices over $220 offering smaller and smaller performance boosts, we have a hard time recommending anything more expensive

nope, there is not, however the asus GTX285 is like cheapest by a long way. but still why?

if you overclock a GTX260/GTX275 enouth they are able to beat a GTX285 anyway same goes with the HD4890

Thanks guys for your replies.

All your comments make sense.

I thought about SLI, but having had a previous SLI setup with the 8xxx series cards I found that the case got too hot.
Even with the addition of extra fans, to my mind the cards seemed very warm.

Going forward my preference will be with the single card solution.
I'll see what the new 3xx series produces but in the meantime trying a little overclocking on the 260 sounds like a good idea.

Thank you again

cheers

Graphics cards can generally run safely at very high temperatures.

I would buy another 260 and if you think it's uncomfortably hot, then send it back under the terms of the DSA.

Hey everyone :) I was looking around for people's advice on getting a GTX 285.

The thing is I'll be building a rig in the coming month or two. I have chosen to go with the 285. I just found that its better than the 260 and 275 because it has more bandwidth, higher frequencies and comes in much cheaper than the 295. I'm not a hardcore gamer but I do intend to play Crysis and the like. What are your thoughts about the 285? Would it be a good buy? And what's the performance like? I read around online; seems good but someone's personal experience or so would be nice :)

A point to note is that I don't intend to OC my hardware (much/straight away anyway) to get a long long life out of my hardware (it'll be my first rig and I want to last for atleast 5 years without splashing any money on it after the build (except for more storage space perhaps :p))
