Upgrade to old machine

Ah, would that be a Corsair HX 620W or HX 650W?

Either way it's a nice PSU and will be fine to use with a new system and graphics card.

I'm currently running a Corsair HX520, and am looking at a graphics card upgrade (still on my old 3850!). Would the HX520 be OK with the 7850, or is that starting to push it?

Yes, that should be fine. The HD 7850 is a rather efficient card and can only draw a maximum of 150W at stock settings.

Considering that PSU can provide a maximum of 480W on the 12V rails (which is mainly used by the CPU and GPU) then you really won't be stressing it with a card like the HD 7850.

So you wouldn't recommend a 7850 for my i3 530 machine with a 400W OCZ StealthXStream? This PSU can deliver 450W+ though

I was wanting to get a 7850 soon when I finish horrible Uni as I'll have a life back

The i3 530 got a TDP of 77W, and the 7850 got a TDP of <150W, so your PSU should handle them fine...even if you overclock both of them. But I would advise you that if you want to make the most of of the 7850, you should overclock the i3 530 to 4.2~4.5GHz to reduce the bottleneck.

Thank You marine,

I'd had this machine a long time now and I like it because it's quiet, I have 2 HHD's and a Xonar DX though so overclocking might be pushing it

I'll see when I get a 7850 or whenever the nVidia 660 arrives (when?)

Actually not even close. If you look at the spec of your PSU:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/fullimage.php?image=18664
It can output up to a total of 372W over the 12v rails. That's would mean after deducting the max power consumption of your CPU and 7850 (372-150-77)+28, it will still have have 173W left for the rest of the things.

You have to bare in mind that the 7850 is a reasonably low power consumption card, and the CPU you got is a dual-core that doesn't consume lots of power, unlike the older Core2Quad CPU such as the Q6600, which can draw up to 140W when overclocked.

yeah that power draw only equates to 53% of capacity which sits just nicely for the efficiency

most people over specify PSU's, there are some ridiculous posts on message boards

cheers, I seen that photo before and took one myself

I like this little PSU and I replaced the fan in it with a BeQuiet!
