I have just phoned Sky and they are quoting me £250 to
come out and upgrade my box / LMB , unless i take out
multiroom and pay another £10 a month.

Anyone know if this sounds right as it sounds very expensive to me!

Cheers

Andy

Sounds very VERY expensive.

Surely easier to cancel completely and re-join, it was about £50 last time i looked.

Sky+ requires another lead from the sky disk. It's really more like haveing a 2nd Sky installed as each box (sky+ and the normal sky box) have their own signal from the dish so in effect your viewing two sky channels at once (which is how it can record while you watch something else)

When we took out sky a month ago it did indeed cost us an extra £10 for the sky+ a month but we also got sky multiroom for free. The equipment is a little expensive as youll be upgraded to a 4way LMB and the box itself so I think £250 is about right. (LMB is about £80, box about £80 and time/cable/callout for the rest)

No point canceling your sky subscription and re-joining, if you want sky+ youll STILL have to pay an extra £10 a month on top of your normal subscription, when I looked into it they also charged us a one off fee of £59 for the multiroom and sky+ hardware! If you moan at them thou you can get the bigger 160GB sky+ box instead of the standard 80GB :)

wtf? 4 port LNB (Low Noise Block, not LMB) for £80?! I pay £15 per LNB (they're not the best quality (raven) but well, in the UK the signal is nice and strong anyway).

CT63 cable (the shotgun cable which is 2 lengths of coax in the same width of one piece of ct100) is pretty cheap too (about 75p/metre). Buy a sky+ box on ebay and you'll have a fully working set up for under £100. Took me about an hour to rip the old coax off the wall, replace with the ct63 (20m run) and replace the LNB. Not a hard job at all :)

is it really that easy?

I'm not talking about what YOU pay, I'm talking about what sky charge for them, and what SKY charge for installation. Yes it's expensive compared to doing it yourself, just like EVERYTHING else in the world is for DIY things. Someone has to come out to do it still, that’s probably an hour of someone’s time minimum and time costs money.

One thing I don't know, if you have sky installed and a spare port on the L"N"B can you simply run the cable from the LNB to a sky+ box you have brought separately and it will allow you to use all the sky+ functions?

Course it will....

And the reason i suggested leaving and re-joining was to get the cost of the officially fitted warrantied equipment cheaper. I think sky will do it for around £50 all in and fitted.

The route i took was simply to buy a quad LNB and sky+ decoder off ebay, and run 2 lengths of coax myself. Cost <£50 and its hardly hard to install yourself. M***n also sell signal meters for less than £20 which are very useful when moving house and having to re-allign the dish.
