Hi, I have been hunting round the internet looking at benchmarks and racking my brain to try and figure out whether or not its worthwhile upgrading my rig, I have been looking at the new skylake setups but still unsure if it will be worth it.

My current specs are:

i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz
Asus P8P67
8gb DDR3 1600mhz
2x XFX DD R9 280x
1tb WD Black

I am definitely going to pick up an SSD regardless but would it be better to get a new CPU, board and ram or a new GPU/GPU's. I game mainly @ 1080p occasionally 1440p but may go for 4k soon.

All help will be much appreciated!

Thanks :)

Get an ssd first then maybe gpu, do any of the games you play struggle? Your cpu is still pretty good going dkylake will yeild little noticeable improvement.
If you do go 4k then a 980ti will probably be needed depending on the games you play.

I can play most games 60fps (I like to use vsync) I only really have issues with games that have known problems or when I try to push for max settings, I would like to be able to max almost anything and play the witcher 3 perfectly if possible?
I also didn't think the skylake would be worth the price for the performance boost, DDR3 to 4 and PCIE2 to 3 seem minimal also.

For 4k you will be in need of sli/crossfire setup so x99 platform
1440p is a nice point for a single card to run at good FPS
So if you decide to upgrade you will have to get a budget ready
Realisticly the skylake platform will give you a small edge in games
But the x99 platform has more usabillity
If you intend to game on 4k x99 is a better option
But this is a question of if you need or if you want a new toy
For max fps on 1440p skylake
4k gaming x99
Bouth platforms cost the same

Do you think a 980ti will run full potential in my system? 1080p most of the time 1440p if I can get consistent frames, I'll be looking to go for 4k when I get my new screen, apparently my current cards will do 30fps in a lot of games?

Do you think it is worth the difference price wise going skylake? how much do you think I'd benefit? 10fps+?
Should I get a GPU with it also or stick with my CF setup?
I am getting a 4k screen and apparently my cards can do 30fps in most games which I could live with capped.
I'm not too fussed about running at 60fps in 4k that would just be far too expensive and OTT

If you plan to keep the 280x setup on 4k
You will have 0 benefit in a new platform
Your cpu will be sufficient to push enough data twords the graphic cards

If you want to game on 4k changing the graphic card will make a difference
Changing the cpu will make no difference
Obviously if you get enough GPU horsepower the cpu will become insufficient for the job
So a dual gtx 980ti must get a x99
A singal 980ti skylike is advisable
A gtx 980/r9 390x your setup will be ok

So if I went for a whole new system in the future, in the meantime would it be better to swap my platform or my GPUs?
You already answered my question before I posted it haha so you think a 980ti will do the job? how about a fury x? (AMD fan boy)

Well I am a and fanboy as well
And the fury x has insufficient vram
Runs ok but the gtx 980ti has more headroom for overclocking
The fury x should be a real alternative if you are interested in freasink
As it is cheaper then nvidea alternative
But on its own fury x not advisable

If you want an AMD card fury x honestly is loosing about 6-7% price performance to the 980ti
The gap is bigger wen you overclock turning in about 10%
So freesink is the appealing factor that turns the price performance twords AMD
But dual gtx 980ti vs dual fury x has a bigger difference price to performance being arround 20% not cool at all
And as freesink dose not worck with crossfire
Dual fury x should not be on a consumer's list
