Hey

I'm upgrading my computer at the moment in preperation for BF3 :D

I'm looking for an i7 with a good motherboard and triple channeled RAM. I'm not too bothered about overclocking atm, more looking for raw power that I can overclock in the future if I feel the need.

From my current rig I'll be keeping my gtx 470, velociraptor 250gb and a thermaltake 750w PSU (aswell as my other hdd's and optical drives).

I'm not sure what the differences are between the different chipsets or what the score is with sandybridge compared to the others so I need a bit of help!

I'm willing to spend up to £600, anyone got any suggestions?

sandybridge is faster than the older stuff - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=100

with a good heatsink (Gelid tranquillo) you can expect to overclock to 4.5ghz easily.

Is that really the best configuration? There doesn't seem enough between the i7 and the i5 to justify £80 of a difference or am I missing something?

Would I not be better with the i7 and a triple channel config in order to be ore future proof? Money isn't really an issue aslong as it's within my budget

Well actually this is the best config,

Thats 8Gb of RAm and a Gen3 motherboard that supports Ivy Bridge CPU's (released next year) and has PCI-E3.0 slots for the next gen graphic cards.

The older socket1366 and triple channel ram is older, less future proof, slower and uses more electricity.

Thanks for your help stulid, really appreciate it :D

One last thing, I would definitely not be better getting the i7 2600k? As i said if its better im not fussed about the money as it looks like I wont need to pay near my budget anyway

For a gaming PC a i5 2500K is as fast as the i7 2600K (which has hypertreading which no games use)

Both chips overclock to roughly the same speeds.
