Finally upgraded to a Gigabyte 970 yesterday arrived, popped it in, had few problems changing power connectors as i'm running out of options..

Problem was my old card using 2x 6 pin connectors

New one uses a 6 pin and a 8 pin?

How my cards compare.

So much bigger!

Tried 3dmark and on firestrike it went from 3217 on my ATI 5870 to 9163 on this 970 :)

My ref 970@stock/3770K-Graphics Score11937, so as above, it's thereabouts.

Massive upgrade from a 5870 so no doubt you'll notice a huge improvement, enjoy.:)

well all was going well till I got home today, and suddenly my pc switched off!

1st I thought a power cut but no, took whole board etc out, setup on table, come to conclusion it is the power supply! after taking another one out of another pc and trying it, everything spins up fine, on my failed one it powered the board with a light but nothing else!

Anyone recommend me a PSU, old one was a Hiper 580w about 5 years old or bit more.
I running i5 2500k as in sig with this new nvidia gigabyte 970, 4 hard drives including SSD that is and DVD.

That sucks but on the other hand, consider yourself lucky that the PSU just decided to stop working, instead of destroying the other components as well on its way out!

Check if you find the new EVGA Supernova G2 550W (or 650W) on sale somewhere already, these two models were just released and are the bees knees. Failing that, XFX 550W Core Edition is a solid, no nonsense budget option.

Good to hear nothing else was damaged. The hiper psu's had quite a reputation for going boom and taking out other parts.

Well I haven't connected my graphics card and monitor's up with the motherboard, but it did switch on okay. On the faulty one it just does turn on at all. Hope all other components are okay.

Could it been the new card using lot of power.

I think I got about 6 months out of mine, I was lucky, no other damage was done.

I've still got the fishing tackle style box it came in though, it's great for keeping all my random PC cables and other bits and bobs so not a total waste then ;)

You were extremely lucky with the psu, when I had one it blew up (kiterally) and took out a 2 week old DFI motherboard. Of course Hiper didn't want to know so I had to fork out for a new psu and motherboard. The 5870 must have really been taxing it as they are so crap they only have 360w on the 12v rail. Take a look at these for replacements:-

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA Supernova GS 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £76.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 750W "80 Plus Gold" Semi-Modular Power Supply - Black £74.99
1 x Antec TruePower Classic 650w '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply £68.99

The Antec's are built by Seasonic and so is the EVGA GS650.
