Hello - can someone tell me what i need to buy to upgrade the 3.06ghz 24" imac from 4GB to 8GB RAM?

Thanks,
Dub

What model is it? DDR2 or DDR3?

Assuming it's DDR3 then to take it to 8GB requires an insane amount of money. If it's the DDR2 model then it maxes out at 4GB.

Indeed, 4GB DIMMS are silly expensive at the moment - no doubt they'll rapidly fall in price, because not so long ago 2GB modules cost a fortune as well, and now look.

As soon as it gets more reasonable I'll upgrade my MBP to 8GB.

thanks guys - i'll stick with 4gb if i get one. Still trying to decide between imac and self built i7 machine... but that's another story.

iMac for "The Look". i7 for obsolete socket and motherboard.

Corrected for you :)

Also how much difference would you really expect in mainstream applications between a decent iMac and the i7? Especially once Snow Leopard comes out. Pro media apps may be different but all the good ones are for OS X anyway!

I will be editing and encoding movies from my hi-def video camera. The i7 will undoubtedly be much better at this. However, I am looking at the spaghetti of wires behind my old desktop PC and thinking it's got to be iMac! :)

Oh and I was talking about building my own i7 machine TO RUN OSX on :) Not something i want to discuss further here as it is against forum rules.

Not sure a Hackintosh is the best way to go and with Snow Leopard comming out the future (for the moment) of hackintoshes is a bit hit and miss.

Anyway Final Cut Express on a good iMac will edit and encode HD video just fine (just don't get one with the 9400M).

It all depends on how serious you are about video editing and how much you dislike cables.

Ahh this was the post i was looking for. Thanks - as long as i can do basic edits im fine. I'm not Tarantino - this is just for home movies. And I'm REALLY hating wires. iMac it is. I'll get the most powerful one with the graphics card upgraded and 4gb of RAM - i'll upgrade when the prices come down.

Thanks again for the advice. Now i just need to get my brother to order it next time he is on his university network! :)
