Upgrading advice please

It could work. Just take a backup and expect to do a reinstall, but you never know - you might get lucky

A fresh install is ALWAYS best, put the latest drivers on etc.

Hoping to use a current install with all the old stuff installed is asking for problems.

I agree, it is always best, but it is also a lot of hassle and i'm guessing the OP has an OEM which could be problematic

Just phone them up crying saying your motherboards died;) and there is no replacement for the age of the PC.

A reinstall only takes 35mins, put motherboard drivers on, latest ATI drivers on from ATI website etc.

you might not even need to do that! I just used the OEM disk on a new mobo for my mum's PC.

Also, I used Acronis as a back up incase there was a **** up and I could restore the OS onto the HDD on a new mobo

Cleeecooo, I own a copy of Win 7 Retail so that shouldn't be a problem :)

stulid, While browsing around I had a look at AMD Llano A8-3850, does the Intel i3 build you suggested have any advantages/drawbacks compared to a Llano build?

Sorry to be a pain :D

llano has a much better onboard graphics core than Sandybridge.
But you have a 5670 card so thats better again.

If you had nothing like this card to put in, I would have considered a Llano build for you.

This - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-a8-3800_12.html#sect0 - shows a i3 2100 and a llano graphics performance with a graphics card.
