Hi, I'm currently running an i5 6600K on an Asus Z170-A with 16gb of 2400 DDR.

I'm looking to upgrade to something nicely mid range as in planning on using the pc as an Xbox series S alternative. I'm way out of the know on current tech so needing some help on which CPU/mobo to go for, thanks

Edit needs to have WiFi
Edited edit £300-£400

If you're on a 'budget' (??? mid range ???) and want to stay intel, an 11400 with a decent b560 board is a great buy at the moment. Stick 16gb of reasonable 3200 DDR4 in there and it's a great gaming setup currently. And only about £350 for all that if you shop around.

I recently upgraded, but went a bit further budget wise as I wanted an 8 core cpu so went 11700 on an MSI b560 Torpedo (great board compared to many - look at reviews, some b560's are pants) with 32Gb 3600 DDR c16 ram. Paired with a 3090Fe it's a gaming powerhouse.

Don't get too hung up about a motherboard having wifi either (though the MSI b560 Tomahawk has wifi, but Torpedo is identical apart from that and has dual LAN ports which I wanted). Just buy a half decent wifi adapter for not much.

It'll be cheaper to just buy an xbox series s, the CPU isn't the problem, it's easy enough to come close for a reasonable price, but the GPU is impossible.

I've added the budget. Is it worth going Ryzen?

I've already got some Xbox games as well as decent collection of pc games to keep going and have already got a decent GPU so for me it makes sense to stick with pc rather than go for an Xbox console.

To be honest after the last gen of consoles pc gaming is so much easier as game updates seem to be quicker and simpler and I don't have to wait hours for a system update every time I turn it on.

Heres a few ways you could go but ideally you will want new ram also as 2400mhz will hamper performance on the lastest ryzen and intel CPUs.

If it was me I'd probably go for option 3 and a better board then drop in a 5800X/5900X in a couple of years when they are going cheap.

Performance between all 3 setups with a RTX3060 will be negligible.

Joxeon's suggestion is great, just to weigh in, I recently went from a 4690k to a 5600x and the difference is stunning, no more little microstutters in anything, fast as hell.

If you play a lot of cpu bound games, Civ, Stellaris, Crusader Kings, Rimworld etc, you will notice an enormous difference.
