Upgrading after years-help please

that looks like the worst bang for buck upgrade ever

since this is your first upgrade in a while why jump all the way to the top then watch the price fall? upgrade when really needed , that gpu is overkill for your screen and you don't need an i7 or ddr3 at all

can you elaborate please as others state differently

Personally I'd probably go for:

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £251.99
(£214.46) £251.99
(£214.46)
Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - OEM £159.99
(£136.16) £159.99
(£136.16)
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £154.99
(£131.91) £154.99
(£131.91)
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £109.99
(£93.61) £109.99
(£93.61)
Zalman CNPS10X Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/775/1156/1366) £44.99
(£38.29) £44.99
(£38.29)
Sub Total : £614.43

I know it's not the cheapest 1156 mobo by any means but it has some very nice features and gigabyte haven't really let me down yet.

*change the XFX 5850 for one by a different manufacturer if you don't mind waiting for stock to save a bit of money.

Unless you're doing lots of video encoding the core i5 will be more than good enough, it's arguably as fast as the i7 in games.

Gotta be an ATi card at the moment, however Nvidia are releasing new cards at the end of this month. Might be worth waiting although they will be pricy.

As for Win7 unless you're wanting to join a domain home premium will be more than good enough, just make sure you install the 64bit version

again, great advice, you guys are very knowledgeable and helpful, thank you.

Well I'm pretty convinced it should be an OC built system just need to get my head around all the advice and go i7 I think for long term, ATI card looks best even though I like nVidia......so the question now is which OC system do I go for and tweak a few bits? I need quiet so thought that Fractal design case looks ideal
any input fellas?
